Introduction to Waze - The Free Navigation Live Social Mapping Crowd Sourcing Solution

wazelogoIf you have ever wondered what exactly Waze is, then in these two videos from Ewan MacLeod of Mobile Developer TV, and Mobile Industry Review, Di Ann Eisnor of Waze gives us a very comprehensive Introduction into the service, tells us about not only what Waze has to offer, in the way of free Navigation, but also informs us of its unique status in the market place, being the only service with Live data from Crowd Sourcing.

mirI had looked into Waze here in Finland, and although in its infancy here, it shows a lot of potential in the future, as the more and more people locally use the Waze Service adding live data to the Waze maps here in Suomi.

Waze started out in November 2009, based in Israel, which incidently holds around half of Waze's current userbase at the moment of 250 thousand users, and now, since opening up to the rest of the world, in just five months, Waze has 150 thousand users in the USA, and more, and more users joining Waze each day, using the service is some 40 countries.

mdtvAs time goes on, the Waze service of Free Navigation, boasting live map data, using crowd-sourcing is destined to be the Navigation service for entire globe. Waze differs from Nokia Maps/Ovi Maps Free Navigation, as Waze Maps, and data are bang up to date, with user feedback, and as mentioned crowd-sourcing, enriches the available Map information endlessly.

wazen97Watch the videos for yourself, (after the break), and you will soon become aware of just how clever the use of the technical capabilities, and ease of use of the service to contribute to the Waze Service of free Navigation in your Country, which also offers Gaming scores that are awarded to the user when new roads, or routes are found, to helping not only yourself in future A to B points, but also to the Waze Userbase that are yet to venture, and navigate these routes.! Videos after the break, including a Guided Tour of the Waze Service.

N86 Gets Treated to Ovi Maps Free Navigation too.

sc1Thanks to Rafe over on AAS, he has found that Ovi Maps Free Navigation is indeed now available for the Nokia N86, thanks to twitter user Andrewjheatly for prompting Steve Litchfield of AAS on twitter about it.

Ovi Maps Free Navigation for the N86 can be found in the N86 SWU (Software update) Application inside your applications folder. Its 8240kb in size, which is quite a large download, and installation file, so ensure you are using either a wifi connection or an unlimited data connection when downloading this.

Rafe reasures readers about a reported Compass issue too with this version of Maps, which incidently is 3.03, confirming it does work, and there is no problem with it at all.

"A few users have said that the compass function does not work on the N86. This is not the case: once you have a GPS  location lock press '5' which will rotate the map according to the compass (pressing it again switches the map view back to 'North up'). You may need to calibrate the compass by waving the phone around in the air in a figure of eight motion. You may temporarily lose the compass lock when you close or open the slide - another quick phone wave should sort you out!"

Head across to All About Symbian now for more indepth details on this release, and some eye candy screenshots of Maps installed on Rafe's own N86. Screenshot(right) from Rafe's post, thanks Rafe.!

Official Microsoft Silverlight early Beta comes to Symbian S60 5th Edition

slYesterday morning I came across news of Microsoft's Silverlight Beta being available for Symbian^1 devices, S60 5th Edition, giving developers the required tools to create applications for Symbian^1, bringing Microsoft desktop applications to your mobile device.

Silverlight, a cross-browser, cross-platform implementation of the .NET Framework for building media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web on desktop computers, is also available for Nokia S60 5th Edition devices such as Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia N97 and Nokia N97 Mini.

sl

Silverlight includes a runtime that is optimized to display content on memory-constrained devices. Silverlight support for Nokia S60 5th Edition devices includes:

  • The ability to view Silverlight applications in the mobile browser.
  • Tools to build Silverlight applications that target devices.

You can create Silverlight-based applications for devices by using Expression Blend 2 (free trial version), Visual Web Developer 2008 Express with SP1, or Visual Studio 2008 SP1 with Silverlight Tools for Visual Studio 2008 SP1. Application deployment on IIS is supported in this release.

Now before rushing out and trying to install anything on your S60 5th Edition Nokia device, its highly recommended that you first take a look at the following Guides, "Getting Started with Silverlight for Symbian", and "Silverlight for Symbian Platform Reference".

Symbian Horizon Helps Last.fm Music Scrobber Application Mobbler Hit Ovi Store

mobblerMany of you may of already noticed Mobbler, the ever so popular last.fm Music Scrobbler now being available in the Ovi Store.

I know that our very good friend Clinton Jeff, of ZOMGitsCJ noticed it, and wrote about it on his blog, and now we have the story behind how Mobbler made it to the Ovi Store, and is quite a success story. Below is a qute from Rod Burns from Symbian Horizon.

I wanted to highlight a real success story for the Symbian Horizon program. The Mobbler application (‘Mobbler – A Last.fm Radio Player and Scrobbler for Symbian’), is open source, free and developed by a community of volunteers. The application is already popular as an unsigned download but access to Symbian Signed and publishing in Ovi is a barrier because of their non-commercial status.

This limits the reach that they have. We tested and signed Mobbler through the Horizon program and published it on the Ovi store this week.

In the first 48 hours of being published the application has been downloaded almost 1500 times from all over the world including 116 in India, and downloads in unexpected countries like Tajikistan and Azerbaijan.

This is a great achievement and really shows why the Horizon publishing program is so worthwhile. We have not only made the guys at Mobbler happy but we now have a fantastic Last.fm player for Symbian which we can shout about in the same way Apple do about their third party applications. But even better, this one was created through the collaboration of our community.

symbianhorizon

The work does not stop here though and we hope to be able to provide a route to market for Mobbler in China through our relationship with China Mobile.

You can find Mobbler, in Ovi Store here, or simply fire up Ovi Store on your Nokia handset, and either search for Mobbler, or checkout new items. Although the application is free, you will need a last.fm account, which is also free depending where you are in the world, so please checkout the last.fm terms here.
