A recent "Turn and Slide" patent has been filed with the US Patent office on behalf of Nokia. Created by Pasi Kemppinen in Tampere and filed on the 8th of this month- the interesting concept posses a unique solution for including a full qwerty keyboard in a compact device without compromising much on size. It appears that the device might also include a camera on a swivel mount that no doubt has plans to operate in a manner that will allow for video calling as well as some stellar photographic abilities we've become familiar with in recent Nseries devices- with seemingly enough room for those optical zoom features Nokia fans have been clamoring for since the N93 gave us a 3x optical zoom.

According to the filing -
The specification and drawings present a new apparatus and method for applying a turn and slide concept for opening and closing a device. A turning part of the device can rotate around a pivotal axis in an angle range, e.g., from a first position to a second position by a predetermined angle, the turning part is being pivotally connected to a first part (e.g., a base) of the device, thus opening the device by sliding a second part (e.g., a lid) from an initial position to a further position using an adjusting mechanism. The first part may comprise a first functional area and the second part may comprise a second functional area located on an exposed surface of the second part, wherein the second part is configured to cover the first functional area in the initial position and to reveal the first functional area in the second position.
Based on descriptions in the filing, it seems the would-be device will feature a touchscreen as well as the unique "turn and slide", which would be positioned at a 180 degree angle for comfortable viewing and ease of usage- though it seems the angle may also be defined by the user. It's a very interesting concept, but it does look to be a fairly involved sliding mechanism with all the pivot points. There is certainly a massive amount of engineering to be done on this device. Let's just hope they take their time for a more solid build and construction on the device than we've seen in recent Nokia devices with mechanical components, such as the much criticized N95 sliders. We're quite some time off from an S60 touch device from Nokia- at least until late 2008 I'd have to assume- and there's part of the filing dating back for May 3rd of last year... so most likely plenty of work has already been done on the concept and there will be plenty more time for solid engineering of this very slick concept.

... No doubt most of us do, Tonny. Sadly I think we've got quite a bit to wait still- the word on the proverbial street is late 2008/ early 2009. |
