Nokia has done it again- widening the gap even further between themselves and the competition. They've gained a little more ground in the third quarter according to market researchers, pushing even closer to the fabled 40% now, ending up at 39.5%- up from 38.9% in the previous quarter. This puts them well above their closest competitor, Samsung, who shipped only 15.1% of the mobiles sold in Q3. Demand was strong in emerging markets, particularly Asia and Africa- with two hundred eighty-five million mobiles sold this quarter, up 12% from the previous quarter.
While this is brilliant work on the part of a brilliant company, it still remains to be seen what's happened in my homeland, North America. Reports were not available yet on the market share over here. This is of course the only market that's really been giving Nokia trouble, or rather the only place Nokia is having trouble with- as I see it's really Nokia's fault for not educating the consumer base over here- but they're finally making a stand here. This is good news, since as it stands Nokia was well down the list with somewhere around 15% previously, placing them in a lousy fourth place behind Motorola with 40% market share in North America, while LG and Samsung were nearly tied in second and third place respectively. I'm hoping that Nokia has covered a little ground in the third quarter over here, but I'm not at all confident that the reports are going to be show stopping when they're released. It's going to be some time before Nokia makes up ground over here, but I am confident at that. The Unlock campaign shows promise, and there was nothing but excitement from the Nokia execs I spoke with in LA last month for the market over here- excitement that I obviously share. Motorola seemed to slip even further down the slop this quarter elsewhere in the globe, recording a 12.9% market share. This is still above Sony/Ericsson's 9.2% and LG's 7.7.
