The Jabra BT8010 is the latest device from my longtime favorite headset manufacturer- and it's a brilliant one. What I find most appealing about the BT8010 is the dual functionality role it plays - it has the chameleon-like ability of acting as an OLED headset with a built in phone book and recent call list, or a quite capable set of stereo A2DP headphones. The fit isn't the absolute best, but it's far from uncomfortable, and there's little chance they'll fall from your head- though I do miss the fit of the old Jabra headsets with the patented ear-gels that go right in your ear and very securely wrap around your lobe- with a proper fitting, you're likely to forget it's attached to your head. When you've got A2DP and AVRCP functions, the ability to easily bring a pair of headphones and a headset on your daily journey without committing to one or the other- or the bulk and hassle of dragging around two devices- and the caller ID and phone book display that allows you to know who's calling, or who you're calling, without pulling your mobile out of your pocket to thwart would-be cellphone jackers- it's easy to find the value in what you've got.
First off is the mono-headset unit-
Very solid build- and not too big. I've heard a lot of complaints about it being bulky- I just don't find that to be true. I've been a longtime Jabra user, and have only used the ear-gel type units that go directly into your ear- so it took a few days to get used to. Even with smaller ears, I can get a good fit because of the bendable ear hanger- which I've found really works well. Pairing is a snap- the first time you turn it on, it goes into pairing mode automatically. The headset will actually pair with two devices at the same time for simultaneous listening. To pair with another unit, you simply hold the on/off slider until the display reads "Pairing mode". Couldn't be simpler. I haven't used the multi-connect feature much other than to be able to say, it works. Certainly useful if you carry two mobiles, Ari Gold style. The features of the second paired device will be limited though, as far as last number redial, pause/play features go. The primary paired device will retain these controls, whether connected to two devices or not. The main headset can be worn on either side of your head, and the display has the ability to be swapped to match- which is a nice little feature. Another feature is the call log, which logs incoming and outgoing caller id information for easy callback. There is also freely downloadable software for managing the internal phonebook, which is convenient if you'd rather not pull out your mobile- phone jackers abound, it seems to be a dangerous activity pulling out an N95 on the foggy streets of London. Phonebook is quick and easy to use, though you do have to register on Jabra's site to download the Control Center software that will allow you to setup the phonebook. There's no doing it on the headset- but the display of names and numbers is quite nice- you can of course dial any number by highlighting the name and hitting the middle of the rotary on the main unit, the on/off button- also the button used to pause, play and advance track. Other features of the headset include a sound equalizer with 5 settings, vibrating alert and brightness controls for the OLED display- which is always quite visible, and shuts itself off after about 10 seconds of inactivity.
There is also a battery level meter on the display, which is a great feature I've not had in a headset before. Battery life is quite good, claimed to be Up to 10 hours talk time / up to 6 hours music streaming / up to 300 hours standby time by the manufacturer. I'd say these figures are pretty accurate from the usage I've gotten in so far. Standby time is really good. Even though it says it comes with an AC adapter, my box did not. No problem though, because it supports USB charging, adding one more device to the list of things I can charge with my Proporta. The usb port is also the port used to connect the secondary stereo headphone.
The matching, though slightly smaller, unit fits just as well on my ear as I imagine it would on any other. The wire is just long enough to run along the back of my head that it is hardly noticeable, visibly or otherwise. After a bit of adjusting, you should find that the headphones both fit quite comfortably and well. Though they're not solidly in my ear like the ear-gel Jabras I'm used to, there's little risk of them falling of your head even with reasonably quick head movements. The headset supports A2DP and AVRCP functions for Pause/play/stop and track advance, though there is no advancing through a single track with the headset controls. They are reasonably loud, even loud enough when moving the lawn. One complaint I do have with them is that because I'm used to the style of headset that fits right inside of your ear, I'm not used to basically having my conversations/music broadcasted to the general public if it's up too loud. If you're in an envoronment that is quiet and your conversations might bleed out from their intended destination into your ear canal, the volume is quick and effortlessly controlled with the use of the big rotary dial on the side of the main unit. A nice little bonus for Proporta users (which everyone should be by now!)- I use my Proporta to charge a lot of different devices- that means I've got all these interchangable charging tips with me, and the retractable USB cable as well. The BT8010 comes with a nice little self-closing pouch big enough to fit all the proporta gear, the other headset piece for stereo listening, a cloth for the N95's screen, and memory cards. Very handy. It's a nice microfiber/imitation suade material, with a springy clasp deal that automatically keeps it tightly closed.
Great battery life, good fit- very nice to have a headset and stereo A2DP/AVRCP headphones without the need to carry both items at all times. Sound quality is quite decent, but nothing anyone who really wants a dedicated set of wireless headphones is going to be too interested in. They certainly don't block out any of the outside world's sounds, if that's anything you're looking for- though this can also be a plus when biking or walking or any activity where hearing that outside world would be beneficial. For me- the BT8010s perfect. The convenience of having wireless headphones with me all the time without the bulk is just a great selling point for me.
