Nokia shared it's vision for the future of mobile technology two days ago at it's "The Way We Live Next" briefing at Finland's northern technology hub at the Nokia Research Center in Oulu. Nokia’s approach to technology is to think not only about the technology itself, but about how it will be used and how it impacts our lives. In the “The Way We Live Next” technology media event a team of technology experts and visionaries from Nokia presented their visions of what the future might bring in areas such as nanotechnology, mobile banking, new energy sources and web technologies.

"The world of mobile communications is changing at an ever increasing pace” said Tero Ojanperä, Chief
Technology Officer, Nokia in his key note address. “To continue to stay ahead in this environment and to
develop innovative new products and services that excite consumers, companies need to embrace openness
on many levels. At Nokia, we work with experts in the academic, scientific and developer communities, and
increasingly importantly, directly in interaction with our customers, Innovation can come from anywhere,
and we need to have the tools and flexibility to respond to that challenge.”

Nokia continued the company's unquenchable thirst for open innovation and establishing what they call a strong "beta culture" with their products and services by presenting and demonstrating areas of advanced research that is being undergone by the company in cooperation with individuals, companies and research organizations around the world.

At the event on the 23rd, Nokia delivered presentations including:

• Web technologies driving innovation in mobile,
• Nanotechnology and solutions for the environment
• The evolution of the Internet user experience
• Mobile payments and banking using Near Field Communications
• Future energy sources
• Smart Connectivity and the future of wireless broadband

The podcasts of interviews with the presenters, and other technology podcasts are available at http://www.nokia.com/technology_podcast.xml- and are again well worth the time if you're interested in getting a brief glimpse at what Nokia has in store for the future of the mobile industry.

Nokia also demonstrated a number of fascinating and breakthrough technologies at the briefing, including the following:

MOSH: a one-to-many distribution platform – a targeted channel for developers and technology
leaders to publish applications and other content, for mobile devices, to a global audience.

Widsets: a mobile Internet service with more than 3 million registered users and over 2000 widgets,
which allows people to enjoy and share their favorite Internet content and to create and publish their
own widgets in the spirit of Web 2.0.

Point & Find: an exciting new way to discover more about your surroundings, using the camera on
your mobile device. The mobile device then displays relevant information about what you are looking
at, fetching real-time information from the Internet.

Shoot to Translate: a demonstration using software that translates written characters into another
language; the original text is captured with the camera on the Nokia multimedia computer and
translation happens in real time.

Virtual worlds: in addition to previewing the first ever photographic exhibition taking place
simultaneously in Second Life and the real world, Nokia showed how 3D virtual environments could be
implemented on mobile devices to create an immersive user experience.

Also announced was the "re-launch" of the Nokia Beta Labs. The Beta Labs, with Tommi Vilkamo at the helm, is a fantastic site where Nokia shares some very exciting and intuitive projects with early adopters, mobile enthusiasts and other generally tech savvy Nokia users. There's a strong sense of community involvement over there, and it gives users the ability to help with future development- which is very important for Nokia and is a great way for users to make recommendations and suggestions for applications or added functionality to existing programs. I think we're ready to see a lot of great development over there with Tommi leading the team. I for one am quite excited to see what's coming next.

Some very interesting, exciting and informative conversations were had with some brilliant minds within Nokia this year. If you're interested in where Nokia is heading, it's well worth a few minutes to grab the podcasts and have a listen...
