Steve Jobs, nominee- The Darwin Award

Darwin Awards

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Darwin Award is a tongue-in-cheek honor named after evolutionary theorist Charles Darwin. "Awards" have been given for deceased persons who met the criteria even as early as 1863. It is for people who kill, or in rare cases, sterilize themselves accidentally by attempting to do stupid feats. As described in the Darwin Award books: The Awards honour people who ensure the long-term survival of the human race by removing themselves from the gene pool in a sublimely idiotic fashion. While an attempt is made to disallow urban legends from the awards, some older winners have been 'grandfathered' to keep their awards.

Wanna learn more about how the iPhone and other Apple products will remove the Apple Fanboy and iPhoners from the gene pool? Read on, concerned one...

Steve Jobs has secured my nomination in this years Darwin Awards for his ironic part in the elimation of the Apple fanboys' place in the gene pool. Greenpeace has apprently been on Mr. Jobs for a while about a certain matter, giving Apple a failing grade for its lack of progress in phasing out brominated flame retardants and polyvinyl chloride, used to insulate wires, back in August of 2006. Apparently, Steve Jobs was just as misleading with his iPhone marketing as he was when he claimed, "Apple is ahead of, or will soon be ahead of, most of its competitors" on environmental issues...

Actually, Greenpeace has found the exact opposite to be true. In a recent report they have the following to say-

"...we bought a new iPhone in June and sent it our Research Laboratories in the UK. Analysis revealed that the iPhone contains toxic brominated compounds (indicating the prescence of brominated flame retardants (BFRs)) and hazardous PVC." The findings are detailed in the report, Missed call: the iPhone's hazardous chemicals

What does this mean? According to David Santillo, senior scientist at the Greenpeace Research Laboratories, two of the phthalate plasticisers are classed in Europe as “toxic to reproduction, Category 2” because they can interfere with sexual reproduction in mammals. “While they are not prohibited in mobile phones, these phthalates are banned from use in all toys or childcare articles sold in Europe,” They are also banned in California and elsewhere.

The substances are found in the earbuds, on the device's antenna and elsewhere in and on the iPhone, so in effect- Steve Jobs is ending the line of the Apple Fanboy by halting production altogether. Kudos, Mr. Jobs. Job well done. A very sensible, non-violent end to future Nokia/Apple fanboy clashes.

See- Nokia is already, and has been totally PVC-free. Even Motorola and Sony Ericsson already have devices available on the market with BFR free components. Nokia has also further identified other toxic chemicals they intend to remove in the future - beyond current minimum legal requirements. That seems to be how Nokia operates, always with the moral responsibility to protect the environment- but silently. While Steve Jobs boasts that his company and his products are ahead of their competitors on environmental issues- despite Greenpeace's annual "Guide to Green Electronics" report that ranked Apple last of 14 computer manufacturers in the world, Nokia quietly retained its position at the top of the list. Greenpeace's Rick Hind said in the report, “There is no reason why the iPhone could not have been made without toxins like vinyl plastics and brominated flame retardants as Nokia is already doing,” Just like the iPhone is five years ahead of the competition.

Steve Jobs yells from the rooftop to flat out lie to everyone in the world about the safety of Apple's products and the effect of the devices and the manufacturing of the devices. Nokia quietly goes about business with an "eco-efficient" approach. Nokia spends a TON of mony every year making advancements in the green operation of the company. They just don't scream and yell about how ecologically moral they are like Steve Jobs does, even though he's lying. Why is that? Maybe because it's just not Finnish to brag about being good, and having good moral intent in your actions and business. Maybe it's because it's just the thing to do. Maybe Steve Jobs should shut his face?

I don't know- but I do know that I'm gonna keep the iPhone away from my nuts... and not to further insult the Apple fans and supporters out there- but I'm more than just a little bit glad that this guy, along with many like minded individuals, are systematically being removed from the gene pool-

Apple Fanman

That's why Steve Jobs has my nomination. Anyone care to second...?

"Our continuous goal is to set the industry benchmark in environmental performance and seamlessly integrate environmental aspects into our strategic and operative activities. Caring for the environment is everybody's business."
Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, President and CEO Nokia Corporation

Ok, I know you probably hate the iPhone, and that's ok. But you have to get your facts straight before you go off on a tirade like this.

First, do you understand how DEHP (the most concerning chemical in the iPhone because it's present in the plastic headphone wiring/bud), or any phthalates affect humans? Probably not. You have to injest or come into direct contact with the chemical. Do you like chewing on your phone? Do you lick your phone? Do you eat pieces of your phone? Phthalates are used in plastics. That's why they've been banned from toys - kids rub, chew and eat toys. These toys are made from the plastic.

Do you even understand that you are constantly exposed to these chemicals in everyday life? Drinking your water exposes you to phthalates. The plastic bottle/tubing/processing equipment that your water was exposed to will likely (studies have indicated that even properly cured plastic will leach chemicals to water) expose you to these chemicals? Oh, and by "expose" I mean "injest" - the worst type of exposure.

As far as the other dangerous chemicals, like the brominated compounds - they are found primarily in flame retardants contained in the printed circuit boards, cables, connectors, etc. Where are these components located? On the inside of the iPhone. Will they effect me? Nope

I agree that Apple should get off its ass and stop using these chemicals because it's bad for the environment. But to think that these chemicals will harm me more than drinking my Fiji bottled water is retarded. To insinuate that iPhone-users will not be able to have healthy babies is just ignorant (even as satire, because it's just spreading FUD). But then, blindly following anything (Nokia in your case) without personally taking the time to fully experience anything else is ignorant too.

Well- I'm not blindly following Nokia exactly- though I do appreciate that view, as this is a Nokia blog... and of course, you can't post something about Nokia or Apple without being called ignorant by the other camp these days. I just thought that the story was interesting and amusing- Darwin Awards are funny. Don't get too caught up in it.

Still- the big point that is being made is that Steve Jobs is a f**king liar, and always will be. He flat out claims that Apple is leading the pack as far as "greenness" goes and his company's effect on the environment- this is an obvious lie. Steve Jobs goes to great lengths to promote his products and the manufacture of these products claiming things that simply aren't true. My problem isn't so much the effect on the environment, as much as it is the lying at ever turn by that snide little man, Steve Jobs. The fact that all the Apple supporters out there take him at his word, and perpetuate the ignorance- that's the real issue.

That's one of the big differences between Apple and Nokia- Nokia will do everything in their power to make sure they leave as small a footprint as possible on our planet- though they never brag about it. They don't get up in front of the masses and scream it from the mountaintops that they're good, and ethical, and morally sound as their business relates to humans, animals and the environment. What does Steve Jobs do? He uses chemicals and compounds that are harmful to not only the environment, but plants, animals and humans. While doing this, he lies in the face of the American public and elsewhere in the world, claiming that he's Mr. Green- going so far as to claim that he's doing it better than the rest of the industry, when in fact he's the worst. Not just on this issue, but all the time on many levels. Just like the iPhone marketing.

That's why I think that Steve Jobs should shut his face. Just my opinion- and yes, it is the opinion of a Nokia fanboy.

This is exactly the reason why I don't read blogs.

Any factual, informative, text is lost among subjective, biased ranting.

Thanks Pseudofinn, you've persuaded me not to bother reading any more "news" articles on this site.:thumb:

I'm no "Apple fanboy" by the way. I've just purchased my first ever apple product, the Macbook Pro. However, it was a decision made on the basis of the tech specs, and the fact that I really like the design of the thing.

Not blind devotion to Steve jobs, as you seem to think some people have...

Lol- sorry about that Raymondo.

I only think that some people are blindly loyal to Steve Jobs because some of them are- I'm not saying that they're all blindly loyal to the brand, but you know as well as I do that some of them are. Same with Nokia, same with almost all brands. There are even die hard Samsung fans out there I've heard.

At any rate, I thought it was kinda funny- that's all. Sorry if it seemed too subjective to anyone- but this is a Nokia site after all.... smilies/smiley.gif
