This is Lisa. She loves her N95 8GB, as well she should. There’s
many reasons to love the N95 8GB. I’ve spent some time with the N95 8GB myself,
and am currently having a go with the N95 8GB NAM (these N95 variant monikers are
starting to become a mouthful) right now courtesy of the fine folks at WOM
World, the Nseries sponsored word-of-mouth resource that covers all the latest
happenings around the Nokia blogosphere. The N95 8GB line has seen some very
nice software improvements since I last played with one. I’ve done a piece some
time back on the ten reasons to update to the N95 8GB from the classic edition,
and it may very well be time to revisit that topic. The shiny black beauty that
I’ve got here in front of me now has flash support in the browser so that I can
play embedded flash content from YouTube, or any of the other flash content
sites out there. It’s got all the fancy updates that I’m sorely lacking from my
beloved N95-3- that’s the seemingly forgotten North American variant. This new one
has vast improvements in speed with regards to the gallery as well as a much
quicker camera load time and processing of the images. It’s also got a larger
screen- which doesn’t really look that big on ‘paper’- it’s a 2.8 inch screen
as opposed to the classic N95’s 2.6 screen- but when you get the thing in your
hands, it’s a quite noticeable difference. The width added to the top slider
that allow for the extra 1/5 of an inch gives most the initial impression of a
rather “chunky” device, and this was exactly my impression. It just loses some
of the elegance of the N95- and yes, I think the N95 is a classy, elegant
device- I really do. The N95 8GB though, with its shiny piano black looks, and
it’s fat-headed slider with the 2.8 inch screen seems to lose some of this. I
will have to say though- I’ve absolutely gotten used to it- and now that the
North American 3.5G network capability has been added to this variant of the
N95 8GB, I’m really starting to like it. One thing that really makes this
device stand out is something that Lisa wants to tell you about…
There are a number of reasons to like the bigger screen-
read on for some of the impressions that the N95 8GB has left of me, and some
of the reasons why you should love the N95 as much as Lisa does...
We hate speculating and spurring rumors, but when this
surfaced on N81 Street the other day; we can’t help but assume new N81 firmware
is coming. The leaked firmware, labeled 20.0.034, is expected to bring FL3 and
hopefully demand paging according to the user(Anarki). Now again, this is based off the provided image and the user feedback; so I wouldn't get your hopes up just yet. Be sure to follow the thread here, as Anarki is sharing his screenshots and feedback.
On a separate note, how is N-Gage treating those N81 (or any compatible phone at this point) owners? It is truly sluggish on my N95, and the poor game selection doesn't help. I really had high hopes for the new, refined N-Gage; but with nearly every decent game "coming soon", I'm not sure what to expect....
Well the N810 got official yesterday (for real this time), so
with the exception of WiMax; what else actually changed? Well apparently there is
an OS2008 update in store, which will also be obtainable for original N800/N810
users. I would guess this would not be available until summer, as that is the expected release date for the new tablet. The update is going to address numerous software related issues, such as
updating the standard email client, Chinese character support in browsers,
along with ‘Seamless Software Updates”. Seamless updates? We don’t have a clue
either... DotSisx from Symbian-Guru
believes this could be a mask for OTA (Over the Air updates), which would allow
you to update your firmware through WiMax (or possibly even Wifi). Personally,
I hope this also means Nokia will make the repositories easier and more reliable to use; and
possibly even auto-update my current apps if I choose to. We all remember the
good’ole days when Canola released a new Beta and their repositories got hammered;
not to mention when OS2008 was nearly unobtainable
for the first few days after launch.
The tablet will initially launch in the US only, and the cost is currently unknown. I would love to see it at the sub $400 range, as opposed to pushing $500 like the original N810. As for the N800's, those are truly at rock bottom prices. If you are fine without the GPS, keyboard, and future WiMax; I wouldn't hold off to grab yourself one.
Apparently there is a Nokia employee who just couldn’t wait
until the official announcement to show off his shiny new N810 tablet. The
leaked pictures, now removed , were displayed earlier today on flickr and showed
some up close images of the suspected WiMax tablet. Internet Tablet Talk users
who saw the remainder of images report the stylus may have changed, let’s hope outside
of WiMax that isn’t the only added “feature” (new camera please?). Be sure to jump in the discussion and have your say before things get really official. One more
day until CTIA , one more day....
As if we didn't expect this already, Nokia is one step closer to announcing the "official" WiMax edition tablet. The image, shown to the left, surfaced earlier today at Nokia's official website; jusy days before CTIA.
The model is suggesting the tablet will retain its current 'N810' label, however it appers the external casing has be given a darker touch. It is unclear on what, if any, other options will be added outside of WiMax; lets just hope we see some prices drop on the current N810 -similar to the ones witness on the N800 just a few months back. More details are expected in the coming days, be sure to hold off on your tablet purchase until after CTIA.
