It looks like the N96 we saw just a few weeks ago is
starting to become a reality. Nokia (or a disgruntled employee after the plant
closing ) has leaked the specs of the N96, which looks like a N95/N81 hybrid, on
the Nokia German site -which were promptly pulled. Thankfully, Mark from the
Nokia Blog snagged and translated the leak, which offers some impressive and
not so impressive specs.
First off, the N96 comes with a whopping 16GB of internal
flash memory; which looks to be 8GB or non-removable internal memory and a 8GB
micro-SD card. If this proves to be true, it looks like Nokia may have been
listening to the rants about the N95 8GB's lack of expansion slot. Nice job Nokia, we now can have the best of both worlds at a cheaper price than that of a full 16GB non-removable flash chip.
Second, the phone is expected to ship with S60 3rd edition
FP2. According to Nokia, Feature Pack 2: "comes with improvements in
usability and software architecture focusing primarily on the mid-range device
category. Usability enhancements support the ease of use in for example
messaging, multitasking and downloading. Feature Pack 2 also enables instant
media playback during downloading and animated notification of inbound calls.
Architectural improvements focus on ensuring excellent performance and
flexibility of S60 in various hardware configurations, and include for example
support for demand paging virtual memory technique." So basically we can expect a speeder mobile with demand paging, along with some media and messaging features. We expect a full
scale demonstration at Mobile World Congress, in which our very own Pseudofinn
will be attending and bringing news to the masses.
And finally, Nokia added support for DVB-H (which is
basically non-existent in North America) in
the N96. DVB-H allows you to receive and record digital broadcasting
transmissions. You may remember the N92 shipped with such a feature back in
2006; however we should see significantly greater support for such services
when the N96 actually launches. This is the one feature that could persuade
those East of the Atlantic to upgrade.
So what's not to like? Plenty actually. Let's start with the
lack of xenon flash, which helps low light images ten fold. We already saw this
feature in the N82, why is it being skimped in any N9x? A xenon flash truly
strengthens the ability of the 5MP camera, while also appeasing those that were
planning on upgrading their N95. And what about those in North
America? Should we expect a second launch months down the road
offering 3g support for us? This seems to be a growing trend with Nokia, and
looks like it will continue not only with N96; but with the N82 (although we haven’t
heard whether it will ever supports NAM 3G) as well.
I am not sure we are really about to witness a revolution by any means to the N series line, but instead a storage enhancement. The DVB-H feature has been floating around since the N92, so we really can't act shocked that it is showing its face again. I really would have loved to see an optical zoom dropped in, as these feature are already hitting Samsung and Sony mobiles. Stay tuned next week for Mobile World Congress converage, we are expecting these specs to be either confirmed or amended during what we hope to be the official announcement.

Much to the excitement of no one, the N95 is now officially
available to order in red. Carrying the same specs and lack of firmware updates as previous N95-3's, the red
N95 carries a hefty price tag of $699 and is obtainable here. I would personally hold off a few weeks until other
dealers have the phone, as we have seen prices nearly $200 USD cheaper for the exact same phone in different colors.
Also, it appears Nokia skipped out on the promoting this product
under the (Red) network. This is a bit
disappointing as multiple other manufactures are offering their products (Apple iPods,
Motorola Razors, etc) under the (Red) label, which helps woman and children
with AIDS in Africa. Tsk, Tsk, Nokia……

When the N82 was launched in November last year, we were promised more color options- a promise that was fulfilled with the white N82- though that model was only an N82 with a white backplate. When rumors began to fly about the black N82, a lot of speculation was made as to whether this will be the same old N82 with a black backing. The discussion is over now. Stefan at Intomobile.com has spotted the black N82, and just as many had hoped, it's full on black. I have to admit, at least in the pictures, this is one great looking device in the new color. I would have to imagine we'll be seeing the announcement at MWC next week- so keep an eye out here as we hope to bring you live pictures of this saucy little black number and whatever else pops up at MWC.
The price is $630, and the ETA is set for February 12th, in the USA only. Not even Canada is getting this one yet it seems as it's not listed on the Canadian Nokia site.
This strikes me as quite odd- because the specs state that it is a WCDMA 2100 device, meaning US buyers will be limited to EDGE, no NAM 3G this round. It's nice to see Nokia pay attention to the American market, but seriously... are we going to see a real NAM variant down the road? Should we take past actions as a warning, and wait this one out? Who's going to buy this thing in the US with Euro 3G, assuming that there will be a NAM variant right behind it? Perhaps we're all jumping too far ahead of the announcement and we'll be seeing the black N82 released globally next week- at least it would make sense.
Buyer beware....? If you're still feeling frisky- order away.

N81 users can now download and install the NGage gaming platform application where select NGage titles can currently be trialled and purchased. The First Access Ngage launch is limited to the Nseries N81 at the moment and will be available to other compatible Nokia users, one would imagine, very soon.
All About Symbian has screenshots as well as the download and NGage FAQ links and promises to bring more news shortly.
Ricky, the Symbian Guru, has an N81 and is getting ready to pump out some screenshots and his impressions on the Ngage First Access as well.
If you have an N81 and want to get right into it right away, click away.
Anyone out there have an N81 with Ngage up and running, I'd love to hear how it's working for you so far!

I recently had the pleasure of giving the Nokia N81 a test run, courtesy of WomWorld. The N81 isn't completely fresh on the market, however still has the potential to win the hearts of audiophiles worldwide.
THe N81 offered the most impressive audio quality I have ever seen in a mobile, and the internal 8GB of storage provided a healthy means of media storage.
Follow the jump for a few thoughts on the device....
