Nokia N810 Released in North America

Nokia N810

The plot of land Nokia has forgotten for so long is finally seeing some decent action. Just a few months ago we got a revised N95 specifically for our 3G bands, and now we are seeing a stronger push of their internet tablets in the states.

"More than ever, people want to bring their online communities with them wherever they go - whether it's on vacation, a business trip, or just around their neighborhood - and the pocketable Nokia N810 Internet Tablet lets consumers do just this," said Bill Plummer, Vice President, Multimedia, Nokia North America.

The N810 is Nokia's follow-up to the N800, and sports 4.1 inch color touch screen display -capable of an 800x600 resolution, 400Mgz TI OMAP Processor, 128MG of RAM and 256 of flash, and 2GB of internal storage. The N810 also brings Internet Tablet OS 2008, which will be an optional update for the N800 in December. Networking is handled via 802.11g connection or Bluetooth pairing with your mobile, still no WiMax for the time being. Data input can now be done by a slide-out backlit keyboard, and navigation is done by an integrated GPS chip. An optional 3-year Wayfinder license can be purchased for $129.99, but I assume Maemo Mapper with Google Maps will do the trick just fine. If you’re considering upgrading your N800, you will lose the FM tuner, two SD slots (in favor of one miniSD slot), and pop-out webcam (replaced by a front-facing webcam). Small loses compared to the full QWERTY and GPS you gain in the N810.

If Nokia actually markets the N810 and doesn't just dump it upon resellers, I really think it could be viewed as an attractive alternative to the Asus EeePC, Palm's Foleo, and UMPC's. Web browsing is a dream on the tablets, and maps can be downloaded directly to your memory card making this a solid GPS replacement.

The tablet is expected to retail for $479 USD, and will be available at CompUSA, select Best Buy Mobile stores, Micro Center, and of course the Nokia flagship stores in New York and Chicago. You can also purchase the N810 from a number of online dealers including Amazon, Buy, and PC Mall.
