While my NAM variant N95 is falling miserably behind the rest of the N95 product line with regards to both performance and feature set, a device released in 2006 is seeing further development. Don't get me wrong- I’m thrilled that Nokia continues to support such a dated device- I just don’t get it. I also don’t mind saying that I’m more than just a little miffed about this, and I've got a few things to say. Please read on... Countless Nokia users had purchased the N95-1 the second it was released. They then went on to suffer though the trials of being an early adopter. Feeling the pains of incredibly slow boot times, laggy galleries and menus- a paltry 950 mAh battery that won’t get the mildest of Nseries users through the day without sourcing a recharge- and leaving power users to muddle through the pain of such a low amount of user memory for the application hungry S60 powerhouse. From there most of these users went on to dump their N95-1 for the NAM variant allowing the grandeur of 3.5G, presumably at the loss of no less than a couple hundred dollars on eBay to fund the upgrade. This, only to be treated as what only feels like a second-class N95 user, or more importantly- paying consumer- and well paying. Now that the N95-1 has been updated with demand paging, flash embedded in the browser, podcasts integrated within the Music Player, the N95-3 is falling miserably behind. It’s been over three months since the N95-1 has picked up demand paging and all the other wonders- in that time the N73 has also gained demand paging, and now word comes of another update for the digital dinosaur, while the N95-3 has received one update- DRM… and it’s been three months since.Brilliant. Now I’m sitting here without proper lens protection, a device that boots up about three times slower than any other N95, can’t play flash in the browser- a feat that can be accomplished now with any other N95- and the feeling that I’ve been an unwitting beta tester all over again. I know well of the frustrations of being an early adopter. I can accept those costs, and for the most part I was very understanding about the pitfalls of the N95-1’s initial release- but this is something far different. There’s all this talk about how Nokia wants to be #1 in North America, and we hear more all the time- but I’m seeing very little action. The action I’m seeing is simply counter-productive to the entire cause. From the inability to find a carrier with a decent Nokia device, to the fact that I can’t get a Nokia branded accessory ANYWHERE around me- it’s tough times to be a North American Nokia fanatic. What are your thoughts? Any N95-3 users out there, I’d love to hear from you today. I’m feeling rather salty and am in need of moral support on this one.
Edit- Other bloggers are speaking up today on this- Ricky at S-G who tipped me off to the sour news on the N73's update, and Mark from thenokiablog.com are both speaking out on this. I sincerely hope that Nokia is paying attention right now- we would all LOVE to hear something from you... Support continutes to heat up from the North American blogging community- pop over to Al's Vox for his thoughts . Zach at Symbian in Motion has a bit different point-of-view. Of course- he has far more contact with Nokia than I do and has a good deal more inside information than myself... so, if there's anything you ever want to tell me, Nokia, I'm all ears- as always. ;) Set as favorite Email This Comments (20)

I did research for about a week before I upgraded from my nokia N80. I thought getting the N95-3 would be perfect...but then I started seeing other devices getting better software support through updates, with the N95-3 left out in the cold.

There should be no reason for this...as a customer, a North American customer, I should be proud of my device. I'm only disappointed. report abuse

True- the N95-3 has far more RAM than the classic N95- so certainly demand paging is much more of a benefit to those users- but there are more differences, such as speed... My N95-3 takes MUCH longer to boot up than any other N95, it takes at least twice as long to open the camera application, and again as long to process an image. Navigating around in the gallery on the N95-3 is a joke after using the N95 8GB and the N82. It's just painfully slower in every aspect, and I see no reason for it. There are other points that I've mentioned above in the artice- Flash embedded in the browser- so we can play youtube and other sites with flash media in their pages. Podcasts are integrated into the music player now with a bookmarking feature. Search 4.0 is now in the active standby screen. Web Runtime.... the list goes on and on. It's not just that demand paging has better utilization of the user memory so you don't run out as fast- that's not the point at all. It would be silly to be so upset with this situation over that. No, no- I'm not being silly, I'm feeling hurt, used and a little abused right now as a North AMerican consumer. It's not a petty argument that we're making here- these are serious concerns that need to be addressed. I see no reasoning behind why the N95-3 isn't being supported- other than the fact that AT&T is thinking about picking it up. WHile this would be a great win for Nokia over here, it's not a win for the existing consumers. Though- I suppose it's only loud-mouthed bloggers like myself and the others speaking up here that are causing any trouble. I suspect that your average everyday run-of-the-mill Nokia consumer isn't concerned with this. I fear another N75 here. If I don't get a firmware update without branding my phone to AT&T, there will be trouble. I hope that better explains the situation that N95-3 users are facing today. Adam BLue- I feel your pain, brother. All I can suggest is that you keep speaking up- we WILL be heard. Nokia reads this blog just like they read all the other Nokia blogs. They are a very progressive outfit and they act on what the users say. I'm ready for the action now. report abuse

Although I feel your pain, the N95-1 doesn't have flash lite 3 in the firmware. I wish...

i agree with u man... i'm a n95-3 owner and it sucks that we've only seen one update that honestly i didnt find any diffrerence with it... i want to have a faster phone with all the functions that n95-1 got with the firmware! i mean.. n95-3 its suppossed to be better isnt it? with more ram and better battery? but what is nokia thinking? "lets make a better n95 and forget about updating the firmware cause its better and lets do something about the n95-1"?? seriously i was all excited when i got the n95-3 now it feels like an obsolete phone! i wish there was a way to put some pressure on nokia to give us a firmware update!

I agree. I'm not bummed with my N95-3. It rocks. I love it, but dang! I see all these sweet updates and think about the things it could do and then I'm bummed. I'm bummed with Nokia for giving us the cold shoulder. I think everyone should hit their web site and tell them. Under "Support" there is a link for comments/feedback. TELL THEM!!! If we all flood them with comments, maybe they'll listen.

Absolutely- the N95 is still an absolutely wicked mobile. I can honestly say for my purposes and preference- it reigns absolute as the best device on the market today, just not the North American version of the N95.

James- you make a fantastic point, Nokia obviously reads blogs- but it would be a tremendous help for every single N95-3 user to fire off a message to them know what we think https://www.nokiausa.com/A4450098 - to submit an email. report abuse

I, too, agree. We here in the US w/ the N95-3 should not be "DENIED". Its ridiculous. It would be nice if we could just get at least ONE GOOD FW UPDATE prior to AT&T getting the phone and cutting off our changes forever of having good FW updates.

The phone IS great as it is now but WHY haven't we gotten a single update? It just doesn't make sense for a company trying to make positive gains in a new country, the USA. C'mon, Nokia!! How am I supposed to brag if you don't take care of me?! report abuse

Well guys, one thing u dint get here..d N73 DOESN'T have Demand Paging like u think it does! We're just waiting for thm to release a firmware which has demand paging so that we can play ngage games on d device widout ne probs of "out of memory" errors interferin d gameplay! And btw, N73 was a better cameraphone in d olden days wid d older firmware, and Nokia has ruined it's imaging wid d V4.XX firmware! IT's all plauged wid d "blue haze" prob now! And hence, NOkia HAS to fix it as soon as possible, it has to make up its mistake..rite? And also, they listed N73 as an NGAGE2.0 compatible device, n now say they're "trying" to solve memory issues before we get d N73 NGAGE application! This's d reason y they gotta hurry up or they'll b accused of cheating their customers by false promises which nevr get fulfilled!

And newayz.. luk at d firmware numbering! N95's got v21 ..which means SO many trials hav been put into releasin d firmwares.. but we N73 users,?? Get jus stupid beta release firmwares which don stay on the internet fr more than 24hrs once they're released! Our firmwares hav been pulled off their servers TWICE for being faulty! And we're STILL on V4.XX! doesnt that suck? report abuse

Well... I wasn't aware of the blue haze in the images- this certainly isn't any good. I've got the same thing happening with my E90- it's no good. Also- I had read so many times in so many places that the N73 got demand paging with this update.

This being said- you're talking about a device that was released in Q3 of 2006, this is now Q2 2008. I'm talking about THE FLAGSHIP device. The device that's supposed to get people excited about Nokia in North America. This isn't going to happen when the N95-3 is SOOOOOO far behind as far as development and features of a nearly identical product sold elsewhere. I've heard all the arguments that "Nokia needs to focus on the Euro market, as that is Nokia's core consumer base". Fantastic, but I'd like to say to all those chaps- Nokia keeps saying they want to make a push at grabbing marketshare in North America- it's not going to happen with their latest tactics of not supporting hardware, not getting their products in stores, and pushing Euro models at us only to release a NAM variant a couple months later to hook us for a couple hundred more dollars. These are the tactics I'm concerned with- not so much the continued development of a two year old Nseries device with an outdated OS. I'm far more concerned with the development of a product line that they continue to expand. I'm not asking to go beyond v21 FW on my N95-3, I just want to be on par with the device I sold on eBay to "upgrade" to US 3G. The N95 might be on v21 firmware, but my N95-3 is on v11. I sold my N95-1 to upgrade to the N95-3 for US 3G- then lost out on demand paging, search from the standby screen, podcast integration, proper lens protection, a world of difference in speed and usability and several other points I've already mentioned. Doesn't THAT suck? I know I'm the one that brought the stories together by associating them in the title of this post- but these are really two separate issues. One is the epitome of the Nseries line, Nokia, and their hopes for the US market- the other is a two year old device that doesn't even run the latest OS which continues to get updates... My main problem is- lots of talk by Nokia without really 'getting' it over here, or putting enough effort into this market amid all this cheap talk of getting things done over here. They've been saying this for some time now- and it just doesn't seem like anything is happening. On the other hand, I think it's great that Nokia even continues to support the N73- though of course it's in their best interest to make sure all the many N73 users can become part of the Ngage consumer base to get that rolling- but it'd be nice to see some effort by the Nokia FW team with the N95-3. report abuse

I agree that Nokia should look after all its mobiles. However there is a vast number of N73 users who believe Nokia will iron out all problems with their N73 firmware. If Nokia fails to do this, it will have betrayed and lost many Nokia loyalists. I also think the N73 is a good testbed for Symbian OS upgrades that can filter through to the N95 and more powerful devies as well.

But keepin dat aside.. aint it Nokia's responsibility to make sure they deliver wat they've promised ?? Don we hav evry right to demand fr wat we've been promised wen they sold device?? N d *censored* crap is, they've crippled d camera themselves wid d V4.XX FW! So it's in their responsibility to fix it up by any cost or face d loss of a huge number of loyalists! N BTW, it doesn hav ne demand paging yet like u've read in those reviews.. or it wudn't b hangin around wid an availability of just 9MB of RAM after a warm up,widout ne apps running in d background... It was jus bein expected, but never actually confirmed..n u can b sure now that u knw it stil has only 9MB of free RAM after a warm up.. N keep in mind dat it has d same 64MB of RAM like d N95.. But d N95 after gettin demand paging gives atleast 30MB of free RAM after a boot up, while d N73 doesnt.. so this explains! report abuse
