US Variant N95-3 'Update' Now Available

Every morning for the last two weeks has started the same for me. Among other mundane tasks- immediately after grabbing coffee, my N95 is connected to my PC and the device is checked for an update while I cross my fingers. Good news for North America and myself came this morning- the Nokia RM-160, also known as the N95-3 or the US variant N95 is ready for updating. The current firmware of 10.2.006 can now be updated to 11.2.009. I'm sure this will bring wonderful things to the last N95 iteration in the form of demand paging and hopefully Search 4.0 from the active standby. Perhaps we'll even be thrown a bone for the two week wait over the classic model who saw an update on the 26th of last month. 

I'm on my second cup of coffee this morning and set to undertake the laborious task of scribbling down the thirty or so S60 applications I just can't live without anymore and backing up everything else in anticipation of an update and all the fun that comes with it. Certainly, for demand paging the task will be worth it.

I wonder what the chances are of seeing a changelog for this model as well....?  At any rate, if you've got an N95-3, it's time to load up the Nokia Software Updater right now.

EDIT- I've installed the new firmware. I hereby retract my latest statement- unless you're a super big fan of DRM, I'd pass on this update for now. No Demand Paging, no Search 4.0 from the standby screen- in fact, it's still Search 3.4... Same old slow camera function, Podcasting has not been integrated into the music player. It actually doesn't even come with Podcasting installed! The only thing that I can see has been changed is the addition of the Music Store in the player.

I'm noticably a little cranky here. I've got to reinstall and reconfigure all my apps, my menu structure, everything... for DRM. Great.

Anyone have a changelog?

So much for a nice start to the day... what a let down.

Try install European FW

Hey, I don't know whether there is a difference in the Hardware (except of the Name RM-159 to RM-160) but it should be possible to install the European firmware (it has English language included) whit just changing the product code of your phone. Than you'll have all the new firmware 20 stuff of the N95-1. No guarantee for that ;-)

I wish that were the case- it seems Nokia Software updater is looking at the product code as well as the model number, so it won't allow the v20 update for the N95-1 on the US variant. Not a bad suggestion though!

Differences in hardware

There are substantial differences in the hardware between the RM-160 and the 159 (european version).

It shares the memory upgrade of the N95-8G to 128MB total/112 Available vs the 64/48 of the european N95-1. Also has a different GPS configuration with support for wireless carrier assist for faster lock times.

PFinn - thanks for going through this first - I feel your pain for not much at all. You saved me and I'm sure many others from the pain of a seemingly needless upgrade - why do they do this??? Nokia of course - they should definately have a change notice etc...

Well, I am glad that it was not all for nought in the end. After all, it was my own fault for assuming to know what this update included- but a change log would have saved me no small amount of grief.

RotateMe beta 4 doesnt work with this firmware

After I upgraded to this new firmware I re installed RotateMe beta 4 and now it doesnt autorun and I get this error when I try to run it:
"Menu: Impossible to execute the program for safety reasons."
My phone its in spanish, I'm translating here, but you get the message.

santiago, para que funcione el rotate me debes instalar primero el plug-in de aceleremoter y el moving ball, estos programas no vienen con el problema de firmarlos ahora el nokmote, shut up, rotate me, debes firmarlos, toda la info esta por internet de todas maneras y no es para nada complicado

i cant get the update for my n95-3.. i run de nokia software updater and tells me there isnt any updates available.... i bought my phone in mexico...

i want to download latest 3 network firmware in my n95 (Sim free), so i can use MSN and other features. which we don't have with any other firmware. could any one give me link or files (COR, PPM, UDA) for N95 please?
