Garmin XT PackageThis review is a big one. Because I want to be as thorough as possible, I dive into all the settings and options I can find. If you’re thinking of buying, you will have as good an idea as possible after reading this review.

Pricing is as follows-

  • For UK and Ireland maps, it's around £60.
  • For Europe, around £90.
  • For North America, $99.99 USD.

The software comes on a microSD memory card (size dependent on maps bought) with miniSD and standard SD adapters. Quick start manuals are included, but no in depth manual. There is a web address in the quick start manual to a more detailed online version.

The newest version of the software is 4.10.60. The maps I'm using is the City Navigator Europe NT 2008. This takes almost 1.5GB.

Spotted at N95users today, member Benz-Driver has posted a picture of his newly updated N95-1 . RM-159 (N95-1) MCU SWV 21.0.016 has apparently been available at Nokia Service Centers in at least the UK since this past Wednesday. The official changelog was posted earlier in the thread- no doubt that if you are an N95 user, you have most likely seen it already. This is basically the v21 firmware that has been in testing and available on a web runtime demo for developers and tinkerers since sometime around October last year.

So if you have an "old school" N95-1 and a Nokia service point around you, I would recommend taking that phone and heading out to that service center. Enjoy the flash in your browser. :)

Edit- To clarify, this update does not seem to be available with the Nokia Software Updater still, as of right now. It should be hitting NSU soon, for now it's only at walk-in service points. It's reported that all generic Euro and Middle Eastern product codes are allowed the update, as well as several local (euro) variants are also being made available. Generic product IDs ready for update include the following-

0561829            0536065
0561270            0555020
0561019            0555012
0557077            0545831
0557061            0536074

I had the supreme pleasure of meeting James Whatley of SpinVox recently in Spain. He's a tremendous chap, and what's more, he's championing the word of a terrific service. He's turned me on to SpinVox which I've been using it for about a little over a week now- and I'm hooked.

If you're not familiar with SpinVox- first off, you really should be- basically what you've got is a number that you forward your calls to from your phone. On my N95 I have it set up to intercept any call that goes unanswered, is declined or just doesn't reach me. When the call is forwarded to your SpinVox number, a voice prompt directs the caller to leave a message much as your regular voicemail would do. The standard greeting is of course customizable, so that when the call is transparently shuttled along to SpinVox, it seems just as though your carrier's voicemail service has answered the call. Right after that, you receive the contents of your caller's voice message as text on your mobile. Absolutely brilliant!

Read on to see how I've applied this and how it's saved my hide once already...

Just received the Nokia MD-3 Music Speakers in the post and recorded a quick de-boxing / mega-short review. I'll be spending a couple days with the unit before I post my complete thoughts on it, then we'll follow up with the more compact MD-6 speakers from Nokia, courtesy of our friends at WOM World, later in the week. Apologies for the video quality. I'll have a better version up shortly. :-)

I think we have all been there, stressing your mobile all day until the battery dies just when you need it most. If you are a bit prepared, you can rip off your back cover and throw in that partially charged replacement battery you grabbed off Ebay (previously me). If you are even further prepared, you pull out your Proporta mobile charger and never look back. The Proporta chargers are currently available in two forms, the Micro and USB (standard) edition; and allow recharging of numerous devices with multiple provided adapter tips. Both the standard and micro devices are essentially built of a rechargeable battery, carrying 3400maH and 1700maH respectively. The micro edition is just a bit smaller than my N95, and packs enough juice to completely power my N95-3 up 1.5x before needing a recharge. It comes in a black, sleek, rubbery casing; and easily fits in the same pocket as my mobile without the risk of scratching it.

Nokia again seems to be finding themselves in court with another company, this time it’s a little different.  InterDigital from King of Prussia, PA is a tech company which owns a wide variety of patents on cell phone wireless technology, involving high speed internet and web viewing.  InterDigital has several companies which already lease these patients such as Apple and RIM; Nokia is not one of them.  InterDigital believes Nokia has been committing patent infringement with their headsets and technolgy they use.  This seems to be a very big deal because the International Trade Commission (ITC) has gotten involved in issuing opinions and rulings and if these rulings help the court system in the UK decide if Nokia is at fault then they need to negotiate a license deal with InterDigital to be able to continue to sell their phones with this technology.   See the implications if Nokia could lose after the jump...

PseudoFinn, crushed.I'm absolutely steamed this afternoon. Ricky just dropped me a line and asked if I had heard about the N73 update- thinking he must mean the last update that brought demand paging to a device nearing it’s end of life well before my beloved N95-3 received such an update- I responded affirmatively. Much to my utter dismay, Ricky is talking about yet another firmware update for the N73- one that dropped today.

While my NAM variant N95 is falling miserably behind the rest of the N95 product line with regards to both performance and feature set, a device released in 2006 is seeing further development. Don't get me wrong- I’m thrilled that Nokia continues to support such a dated device- I just don’t get it. I also don’t mind saying that I’m more than just a little miffed about this, and I've got a few things to say.

Please read on...

The crew over an Engadget Mobile were able to get their hands on the newly named T-Mobile Nokia 6650 for overseas.  They have a couple more shots of this device and some thoughts.  Head over by clicking the link below and check out what they thought.  Again, as I sayed before this phone dosen't do anything mind blowing but it seems like a great product by Nokia for a certain market.

silverlight

Nokia released today that it has seen the consumers needs once again and are bringing in Silverlight for web video content.  Microsoft’s program will be available first for the S60 platform devices and then S40 and Internet Tablet devices later.

"Today's consumers are very clear in what they want: easy access to tightly integrated services and data on any device," said Lee Williams, Senior Vice President in Nokia's Devices software organization.

Nokia also uses other companies for several different programs, such as Adobe Flash for similar content.
Here’s hoping it creates a great program that helps view and distribute content.  We will see what this is capable of when Microsoft demonstrates Silverlight on the S60 platform during their keyote at Microsoft's MIX08 conference on March 5 in Las Vegas.  View the full article after the jump.  How do you think this will help Nokia?

Jaiku InvitesA great new service has just been created to help current Jaiku'ers to share those invites to one of my favorite services. Here's the deal- every new user is given ten invites to share... the only problem is getting these invites in the hands of would-be Jaiku'ers. These fine people have recognized and acted on that principal with a service that is simple and quick for both sharers and those seeking invites. I've shared two already today and plan to distribute the rest of my invites, presumably, by the end of the day.

If you're not on Jaiku yet, but want to get started, visit Jaiku Invites and get online today. If you're on Jaiku, and like many of the users still have several invites hanging around, help your fellow man and share them up!

Jaiku is a kick ass service- if you're not familiar with it, pop on over to Jaiku.com for the tour. Even for the most non-technically inclined users that want to stay connected to all their friends and know who's up for a pub meet or whatever the case may be, things couldn't be easier. Check it out- head on over to Jaiku Invites and setup your account today. Takes just a second and you'll be online in minutes. For a Nokia user, there's a wealth of information and discussion going on all hours of the day from Jaiku'ers across the globe on your brand. Speaking of which- there's a brilliant S60 app available for you to keep current with your Jaiku streams on your Nokia mobile, or you can always use the mobile site at m.jaiku.com.

The Internet Tablet School posted some new videos which can be helpful for those new to the internet tablet world.  They have been busy over there and posted a total of 33 tutorials this year alone.  So if you are looking for some “How To’s” this is a site for you.

The video after the jump shows how to word process with the built in Notes and the internet’s Goggle Documents on your N800 and N810. This should be making it easier to get your thoughts down.  The video posted below is how to find and change your internet tablet’s theme.  I really like these videos they are very clear and precise tutorials. If you don’t like the video, as we said in a previous article they offer a text version for each process.  It is best to use a little of both so that you get a full understanding.

If you own an N800 or N810, tell us about some themes you might use and how you word process on your tablet.   Check the video after the jump for the word processing tutorial.
