As most of the donators will already know, RotateMe 2.0 (Beta 7) has just been released (Go here if you havn't collected it yet). But more improtantly, this is to be the final public release if no bugs are found. Which, (Judging from the feedback received so far), looks to be very likely! For those who didn't donate and gain access to these betas, it looks like you're going to be within reach of the final release very soon indeed! This is great news for everyone in the long run as it ultimately gives Samir some extra time to work on his other upcoming creations (Nokmote, RotateMe 2.1 and some others that currently lack details).
Beta 5 is still availible from Samir's site (Here), though this should hopefully be updated with the final release any time now, so keep your eyes peeled folks!
I’ve been on a miserable quest to purchase a simple
accessory from Nokia for a week now.As
a North American consumer, the HH-12 Easy Mount windscreen suction clamp has
proven to be nearly unobtainable. I’ve been hearing some good things about the
mount. Ricky at Symbian-Guru has just reviewed it quite positively. I’ve seen
it featured in the N800 Internet tablet NaviKit that seems to have received
positive feedback as well. Every cab driver in Helsinki seems to have one, I
assume either because it’s a Nokia and who would be caught dead in Finland with
a Swedish windscreen mount or because it’s a fine product that does the job
well. The little carts that shuffled us down the driveway to the Nseries party
at the LA mansion a couple months ago all had N95’s mounted to them playing
that horrible Moby song. So… they exist, I know they do. Why can’t I buy one?

Most of you will be familiar with the name by now, and probably even installed a few of his themes to your S60 3rd device. In the last year or so, PiZero has made an outstanding name for himself as a profound theme artist, ranking in the same leagues as some of our favourite creators. Unlike many others, PiZero has never taken public requests for his themes, which is what makes this competition an extra special event. He is offering to make a 100% unique, customised theme for a single PiZero.net user. This theme will not be published on his blog, nor anywhere else unless stated by the winner. One of you guys could end up with a very special, one of a kind theme here ;)
To enter, just trot along to the competition page and leave a comment (I advise reading the stated rules first)
N82 users will be happy to discover that their beloved devices are even more useful than once believed! Thanks to some useful information from Kevin at S60 Multimedia Blog, we have now come to understand that the N82 can actually preserve certain data throughout the firmware update process (Only settings and applications have been mentioned so far). This is the first NSeries device to accomodate such a feature, but only leads us to wonder if/when this will be availible to other earlier devices. Will future firmware updates offer such capability? For now, we can only hope.
Word on the street is that you guys are also receiving a firmware update soon, so keep your eyes peeled ;)
Astraware, the huge game producer for Palm and Pocket PC have finally brought themselves to start porting their games to Symbian! (This includes UIQ and S60 3rd)
As with all developing products, they need to be tested and that's where you guys come in. Astraware needs Symbian beta testers for their games and are inviting the general pubic to sign up and participate in their activities. The process is a little lengthy and maybe even complicated, but I'm sure the more eager readers will have no problem in putting in the effort to get signed up ;)
This one is for all the bloggers out there. Wavelog is a great new blogging client from Telewaving that supports full multimedia uploading to XML-RPC servers (That's WordPress or Blogger to you and me). The application allows uploading of text, images, video and audio straight from your handset! It supports full network access (GPRS/3G) and also WiFi connections (For more cost effective uploading). There is even an implemented article storing and re-sending feature for whenever these connections may not be availible.
Released today, Wavelog is availible for a trial download (Only allows for text uploading) and can be purchased fully via a liscence code for a measly $10! (~£5). The manual is also availible for public review, so go and grab it now!
Tongren, the newly accredited developer of FlipSilent has recently released the newest version of this very popular application. Though only available to donators, this release really stands out from the older versions, and makes this application an absolute must-have for anyone with an N95, N82 or N93i. I very much recommend donating, and getting your hands on this great application.
Version 1.03 has had some major improvements: 1 - The active call bug in v1.02 has been completely fixed! 2 - Added alarm support (Snooze, stop) 3 - Multi language support - Now supports 10 languages (English, French, German, Italian, Swedish, Danish, Portuguese, Chinese, Arabic, Romanian) 4 - Power saving support added
It's been a busy weekend for applications indeed! So to start us off, I thought I would share with you all, the newest application in my 'Apps that make life a little easier' collection.
MyID SSwitch (MyID Simple Switch v0.04 - Not to be confused with MyID Switch v0.06, which needs confirmation before switching) is a nice little application that instantly toggles your caller ID setting upon opening it. This is very useful if you are tired from typing '141' (Or similar codes for other countries) in front of your phone numbers every time you make a call, or even to switch the setting manually. You can stick a shortcut to this application onto your standby, and it's there for whenever you need to make a call! Nice, quick, small, effortless and most of all easy!
You will need to sign the application before use - See here for a quick guide on signing applications.
Looks like those who are dissatisfied with the OS 2007/2008 interface finally have a new option. Ty from Geek Penguin has successfully installed an "optimized" port of KDE on his Nokia N810, claiming performance similar to his desktop. The KDE port is pack with a few useful applications as well, including KOffice and CUPS -allowing printing from the tablet. This really proves the potential of the hardware shipping in the tablets, and I do not think its too far off before we see a complete distribution port.
You can get instructions for the installation over at Geek Penguin and Tablet Hacker. I will be installing this on my N800 shortly and will keep you updated with the progress. The N800 has a slightly slower processor than its successor, however it should still be capable; although possibly a bit slower. has the same processor as the N810, however it was orginally underclocked (until OS 2008).
First off, let me clarify what I'm talking saying. I'm not claiming fault with the fact that Nokia has been unleashing some of their wickedly powerful Nseries devices on North American soil- I couldn't be happier with that- and Nokia's newly found focus on the market over here in general. Despite our very, very backwards way of doing things- our market shows massive potential for converged devices and online multimedia-centric applications and services due to our generally and pleasantly reasonable data plans- something that seems to be seriously amiss elsewhere in the globe. No, no- I'm happy everyday to hear more about Nokia's plans over here. What does bother the hell out of me, and more that just a few others, is how Nokia has gone about the business of getting smartphones into our hands lately over here. My buddies Zach from Symbian in Motion and Ricky, the Symbian-Guru, have both recently voiced their opinions on the matter and I echo their thoughts on the entire subject.

Look- up in the air! Is it a bird, is it a plane?? No! It's Nokia's
apparent expectations for North America in 2008. Though they declined
to officially comment on US economic woes, Nokia is stating that they
have no plans to change their business plan for the continent- and that
we can be expecting loads of devices tailored to fit the AT&T
portfolio as well as development of CDMA devices for Verizon.
In an interview at CES, the newly appointed president of North
American operations, Mark Louison said, "It's not unreasonable you'd
see between six to 12 new
operator-specific devices this year. It'll probably be more
than this."
"You'll see some of that in the first half of 2008, with
the velocity to increase that in the second half and going full
steam ahead in 2009," Louison said.
Fantastic news for North America indeed! Nokia leads the world in
cellphone sales, at somewhere over a million phones shipped everyday,
accounting for some 80% of the revenue of mobile phones over just
slightly under 40% marketshare. If they intend to jump over 40%,
there's a lot of work to do in North America- and apparently Nokia is
gearing up for that battle full-force. Currently Nokia is in fourth
position in North America behind nearly everyone- including Motorola-
which if you've been following Motorola's miserable existance in the
mobile phone world lately, has to be rather embarassing to Nokia.
Though, of course Motorola does far better in North America than
anywhere else. Louison expects to see improvements in marketshare and
US business with their two biggest North American customers, AT&T
and TMobile, immediately as 2008 kicks off.
Nokia is currently
in that fourth position in US marketshare with a paltry 11%, LG was
third place with 15%, and Sony Ericsson ranked in with 18% at number
two. Motorola led the group in the 3rd quarter of last year- somehow
managing to hold onto a whopping 33% as excitement over the absurd line
of Razr, Krazr, Rizer and whatever else they've been doing over there
finally dies. As Nokia gears up to grab marketshare- just as Sony
Ericsson has announced plans for- if Motorola doesn't come up with
something big... this tussle between the two cellphone makers could
very well result in pushing Motorola out of existence from the mobile
phone world for good.
No matter what actually happens- 6-12 handsets from Nokia on
AT&T's menu will most likely make for a very exciting year on this
continent. If only Bhupinder Panesar could get a job with AT&T...
I'd love to see a roadmap. ;)
This week welcomes a new member to the writing team at
NokiaUsers. Gizmoratty has been a big part of N95users.com for the past couple of
months, proving to be a wealth of knowledge on the subject of topic over
there. When we asked him if he’d like to share his views on more than just our
beloved N95s, he was quite eager to get started. This was evident when I woke
up this morning surprised and delighted to see that Gizmoratty- just as
he’s been doing non-stop at N95users- has already posted his first bit,
bringing us news of yet another item in the never ending stream of S60 apps for
Nokia users.
Gizmoratty is the first member of the NokiaUsers writing team
from the UK- and we hope that his geographical position will help to balance
out our view of Nokia here for everyone as we begin to report from both sides of the
Atlantic today.
An incredibly warm welcome from Brandon and myself to
Gizmoratty as he joins the crew.
