BGR: Nseries meets the QWERTY

The rumor mill is in full-force this weekend as Zach at The Boy Genius Report is clarifying earlier news that the Nokia Nseries team is working on bringing us a QWERTY device. Some confusion arose when spypics of an Exx Eseries device surfaced this morning, shortly after Zach gave us first word of an Nseries QWERTY in the works.  In the updated story , word is that that the new  device will feature a candy bar form factor, Feature Pack 2, a 5 or 6 Mpix cam as well as other goodies we've become accustomed to with the latest Nseries devices such as 30 fps video recording and GPS.  The big shocker came as he reported that this device will not only come in a NAM variant- it may be exclusively a North American device, or at least released simultaneously with a Euro-spec model. That's terrific news for this continent for once at the launch of a powerful Nseries device. This could be the beginning of a vicious attack on North America by Nokia who seems to be gearing up to grab a massive amount of market share for the first time in several years. Also worth noting is that we'll not be seeing this device until the second half of 2008- which might as well be a zillion years off as far as this year is shaping up. Nokia has already been reported to be preparing the release of 30 device within the next 6 months. Hopefully we'll be seeing official announcements instead of more rumors- but those are fun too sometimes.

E61 Successor?

There are some pictures popping up all over the net today of an unknown Eseries device labeled Exx (perhaps the E71?) which is rumored to be available in Q2 with WiFi, HSDPA, GPS and a 3mpix camera in a 57x112x10mm 120g sized package. 10mm- quite impressive, though of course the screen will be smaller than the E61. A 3mpix camera would indeed be a nice addition to an Eseries device- business people actually do like to take pictures too, Nokia. Looks like it's gearing up to be yet another incredibly solid well built Eseries machine with lots of good metal bits. It's one thing that's quite nice about the Eseries line is that they generally have fantastic build quality.

Another E65 update is also rumored to carry the same 3mpix camera, as well as GPS and HSDPA- also apparently slated for Q2. We'll presumably see these devices and undoubtedly more at 3GSM- though I really hope we see something with North American 3G capability at CES next week.

V15 N95 8GB

In case you’ve somehow missed it everywhere else yesterday, there’s more fantastic news for N95 owners- well, at least for the ones without US North American 3G frequencies… yet again. The 8GB variant has seen another tremendous update to v15.0.015, this time including full-on YouTube and other similar flash embedded content in the native browser. The Web Run Time is also bundled in this update, enabling the new widget platform from Nokia. Further speed boosts have also been cited.

Steve Litchfield was apparently first to grab the story early yesterday morning, and has a good deal of information for any N95 8GB users interested in hearing more- you’ll definitely want to hop over to All About Symbian for a load of images and a decent bit of discussion on the update if you haven't come across it yet.

Fantastic news right? Not exactly... click through and read why I'm not entirely thrilled with the news, and why I might have been screaming at my monitor in lieu of a representative from the Nokia firmware team yesterday.

Nokia DashmountRicky Cadden, the Symbian-Guru , has recently posted his review of the Nokia HH-12 windscreen suction mount and the CR-82 universal mobile holder. It's a great review of what seems to be a couple of solid products designed by Nokia to keep your mobile in a functional and handy location when you hit the streets. In his feature video podcast, Driving with the Guru , Ricky shows how great the mount holds up as he uses it to replace his old recording rig- it's definitely worth a look if you don't already subscribe to it... which you really should.

N82 CameraThere’s a good discussion in the Convergence Zone over at the S60 blogs that deals with the fact that today’s mobile phones are becoming serious competitors to dedicated cameras and the fact that people are unwilling to accept this. True- camera phones will in all likelihood never completely replace the stand alone digital camera but it certainly offers some features not found in such devices, and rivals the existing features for casual, yet high quality photography. With the added bonus of other converged features such as GPS, direct and fast access to photo sharing resources such as seamless flickr uploading combined with the fact that you don’t have to carry a second device with you, and aren’t likely to do so all day long, every day.

N95users.comWe’ve just added a new section to the forums at n95users.com, our sister site obviously dedicated to the Nokia N95. So much discussion has come up regarding the recently ‘discovered’ accelerometer that we’ve added a separate category for the feature. With over 20 threads and about 1400 postings, there’s quite a lot of info to dig through over there already about every application out there that takes advantage of the sensor from the practical Pypoziomica v1.0 level and the myriad applications of recent coding hero Samir to the highly impractical and super geeky Lightsaber  and wicked cool ShakerRacer that allows you,  an RC car and your N95 to raise hell with the most intuitive control ever. Pop in and join the discussion, or just read about the silly and practical that is the library of applications available for  the N95’s accelerometer sensor.

Nokia BH-604I’ve recently received a trial pair of BH-604 headphones from womworld.com.  The sound quality is quite impressive, but it does come at a bit of a hefty price. The headcans are massive and this of course help to make them comfortable for extended periods of time- which is great because the battery lasts a long, long time- but takes a hit in the portability factor. The Bluetooth 2.0 EDR spec’d headphones offer A2DP (advanced audio distribution profile) as well as AVRCP (audio/video remote control profile) though only the class two range of 10 meters (30 feet).

Quake Samir made a few lucky Nokia fans Christmas when he released NokMote beta to a limited number of donors. The beta allows users to control their N95 by motion, using th built in accelerometer. What’s even better is Wayfinder from Symbian Freak got the setup working in harmony with Quake, a port that made it to Symbian some time ago, on his TV. All the controls are completed by NokMote, no more trying to press those tiny buttons in the heat of the battle.

A new element of gaming is being brought to Symbian, and sadly it isn’t being done with much help from Nokia. Given the huge success of the Nintendo Wii you would think this type of control system would become integrated with some of the N-Gage games (Star Wars please!).

Follow the jump for a quick video of Quake in action...

WebotWeBot, a similar service to Orb, has just announced support for Nokia's N810 internet tablet. The service allows media streaming from any high speed connection, including mobile tethering, and allows users to stream media from their Windows, Linux, or Mac computer. Once you sign up for you free account, you can download your copy of WeBot 'bot', which acts as a mini server for the content you wish to share. The service also works fine on the N800, as streaming is done within the web browser.

WeBot is still in beta for now, but we'll keep you updated on future enhancements and releases. Don't forget to jump in the WeBot forum for now and voice any concerns you may have, as initial impressions show the developers taking interest in what the users are saying.

ExtGPS for S60v3I've been playing around the last few days with this pretty slick application on my N95. ExtGPS is a java based app that allows a bluetooth connection to be made with an S60v3 device to act as an external GPS for Mac, Windows, Linux and other S60 devices. The most interesting use of it for me has been connecting my N95-3 to an N800 Internet Tablet running Maemo Mapper. In this scenario, the N95 provides 3.5G connectivity for super quick map tile downloading as well as GPS to the N800. The setup is extremely quick and couldn't be more simple.

The N81 firmware has been updated to 11.0.045, and is now available through NSU for some product codes. The update includes the Online Share app where Vox and Flickr can be activated and setup. The Navi-wheel is reported to be much more responsive.

Morpog has a great initial report over at Symbian-Freak. Some highlights of his experience with it so far-

- Flash Lite is still at V2.0

- about 2-3mb less ram after fresh bootup, not sure how much because I can't remember the size before flashing.

- Browser doesn't seem to crash anymore when scrolling very fast through bookmarks.

- Realplayer still stutters from time to time when viewing Video Podcasts. CorePlayer does alot better job still.

- Music player sets volume back to its Volume before a Warning tone appeared. Before update it stayed at Profile set Volume of Warning tone, which was very annoying.

- Camera images seem to be a bit less noisy. But it's still horrible at low light situations.

- Just had my first phone hang, I was on Gallery and listening to music. Music stopped, so I watched from my Computer display to my Mobile display and thought what's going on? Tried to start music again but noting happened. Tried to navigate in gallery, nothing happened. Tried swithing to Taskmanager, but it hangs on switch from gallery to taskmanager. Sreensaver and Standbye seems to work still, but i cannot do anything. Even power off doesnt work. Needed to put out battery. My baby runs again. Will let you know if that happens more often.

Fantastic initial look at the firmware- certainly a worthwhile update with some great changes in there. Though once again, and official changelog would be nice so that users know what they're in for.
