Nokia shared it's vision for the future of mobile technology two days ago at it's "The Way We Live Next" briefing at Finland's northern technology hub at the Nokia Research Center in Oulu. Nokia’s approach to technology is to think not only about the technology itself, but about how it will be used and how it impacts our lives. In the “The Way We Live Next” technology media event a team of technology experts and visionaries from Nokia presented their visions of what the future might bring in areas such as nanotechnology, mobile banking, new energy sources and web technologies.
"The world of mobile communications is changing at an ever increasing pace” said Tero Ojanperä, Chief Technology Officer, Nokia in his key note address. “To continue to stay ahead in this environment and to develop innovative new products and services that excite consumers, companies need to embrace openness on many levels. At Nokia, we work with experts in the academic, scientific and developer communities, and increasingly importantly, directly in interaction with our customers, Innovation can come from anywhere, and we need to have the tools and flexibility to respond to that challenge.”
Nokia has done it again- widening the gap even further between themselves and the competition. They've gained a little more ground in the third quarter according to market researchers, pushing even closer to the fabled 40% now, ending up at 39.5%- up from 38.9% in the previous quarter. This puts them well above their closest competitor, Samsung, who shipped only 15.1% of the mobiles sold in Q3. Demand was strong in emerging markets, particularly Asia and Africa- with two hundred eighty-five million mobiles sold this quarter, up 12% from the previous quarter.
Mywaves, based in Sunnyvale, California announced the availibility of their video content in the Nokia Video Center today. They join with global content brands such as Reuters, CNN and Sony Pictures to deliver free high-quality mobile videos to Nseries devices owners around the world.
Millions of consumers across the planet will now have access to a selection of over 200,000 channels via the Video Center application. Through the Video Center, mywaves will provide personalized access to TV and video-on-demand services on Nseries devices via cellular and WiFi connections.
"Our addition to the Nokia Video Center lineup provides streamlined distribution into Nokia's strong global market share, giving mobile consumers yet another way to access our compelling video entertainment while delivering even higher visibility and reach to our advertisers," said Rajeev Raman, CEO, mywaves.
The Jabra BT8010 is the latest device from my longtime favorite headset manufacturer- and it's a brilliant one. What I find most appealing about the BT8010 is the dual functionality role it plays - it has the chameleon-like ability of acting as an OLED headset with a built in phone book and recent call list, or a quite capable set of stereo A2DP headphones. The fit isn't the absolute best, but it's far from uncomfortable, and there's little chance they'll fall from your head- though I do miss the fit of the old Jabra headsets with the patented ear-gels that go right in your ear and very securely wrap around your lobe- with a proper fitting, you're likely to forget it's attached to your head.
When you've got A2DP and AVRCP functions, the ability to easily bring a pair of headphones and a headset on your daily journey without committing to one or the other- or the bulk and hassle of dragging around two devices- and the caller ID and phone book display that allows you to know who's calling, or who you're calling, without pulling your mobile out of your pocket to thwart would-be cellphone jackers- it's easy to find the value in what you've got.
Lot's of info to come on the device- I've got to get cooking for a dinner party tonight, but I wanted to give you my first impressions and observations...
There's a ton of discussion about this mount over at N95users.com in the accessories section, but there must be a few N95 users out there that still haven't visited the forum. Abhishta from TechnoBlabber and Ricky, the Symbian-Guru were asking about vehicle mounts for the N95. A few months ago I got a mount that was specifically made for the N95, and specifically engineered to mount to the dash in my Volkswagen without and adhesives, drilling or screwing- I've been singing its praises, as many others have, ever since.

In a press release on Tuesday of this week, Nokia announced a newly forged relationship with Telefónica, a Spanish telecommunications company and cellular service provider. The co-operative efforts are said to include areas of menu customization, technology and billing co-operation. This is pretty big news and I would have to imagine a great hurdle for Nokia to clear for its plans with Ovi- not to mention a completely new way of thinking from the cellular provider camp as cellular providers begin to see the value of Ovi with regards to their own interests.
This is some pretty good news for N95 users- until now, I thought we were all going to be waiting for S60 devices with the next feature pack on them- but Salada has found this little bit of news.... I've already sent my email and IMEI number!

One of the biggest things I got from the Nseries event in LA last week was how incredibly accessable the Nokia executives allowed themselves to be. Not only were they mixing with the crowd all night, allowing users to have one-on-ones with them and get a little face time with a Nokia executive, but the group from WOM World was allowed a closed door Q&A with Bill Plummer, VP of Multimedia for Nokia North America, and a couple others from his team. It was incredibly informative (even if some of the team didn't know the model numbers of the Nokia accessories, or even the N81- which I don't mind telling you, was a little shocking!) and they did a fair job at answer the questions they were able to, and handled some of the odd questions quite well. I'll get right to the meat of the information-
