ExtGPS - Internal GPS Sharing for S60v3

ExtGPS for S60v3I've been playing around the last few days with this pretty slick application on my N95. ExtGPS is a java based app that allows a bluetooth connection to be made with an S60v3 device to act as an external GPS for Mac, Windows, Linux and other S60 devices. The most interesting use of it for me has been connecting my N95-3 to an N800 Internet Tablet running Maemo Mapper. In this scenario, the N95 provides 3.5G connectivity for super quick map tile downloading as well as GPS to the N800. The setup is extremely quick and couldn't be more simple.

Click through to read more, with video and a download link for the free software.

In case it needs to be mentioned, you'll of course need an S60V3 device with an internal GPS- currently that means N95/E90/6110/N82 owners. I've tested the app on both the N95 and the N82, both work fantastically.

The process to share a compatible S60v3's internal GPS to the N800 signal couldn't hardly be easier or quicker. Simply launch the application on your mobile, fire up the GPS location from the control panel in the Internet Tablet and provided that your mobile is already paired with the tablet- hit refresh and you're off and running. The GPS data will be available to any application such as Maemo Mapper right away. Here's a short little video showing the rather simple operation-

According to the developer, Symarctic.com , a fully charged original N95 with the 950mAh batter should last you 6 and a half hours of GPSing. This is of if you don't use any other features of the N95. Basically it's on par with your standard external BT GPS units.

With the N95's ability to tether wirelessly via bluetooth and provide the Internet Tablet with 3.5G data access, downloading street and satellite maps is no problem. With the added functionality that ExtGPS provides- this makes a pretty knockout team.

If you're interested in connecting the N95 to other devices, the developer has you covered with instructions on how to pair up with a Mac, PC or Linux machine.

The software is free and can be downloaded via the link or you can zap it on to your device with this handy little code in no time at all-

It's a very cool application, indeed. Basically it allows me a little more time before I have to drop five big ones on the N810 in a month or so. smilies/wink.gif

Just tried it on my N82 and N810 and it worked great.

But you said it's for use with other S60 phones too? I can't get my N82 GPS data to work on my E51 and E61i. I use Nokia Maps and Navfone Pro and neither application recognise my N82 as a legit GPS receiver.

Any advise?

Any one tried it with the Nokia 5800 XM
Does the software allow sharing of the 5800's internal GPS with another phone like the E51?

Help Please!
Please help me, I installed MaemoMapper, but the setting option BLUETOOTH is faded. It is not available. Then the program keeps looking for the gps-bluetooth but never finds it. And when I click on RESET BLUETOOTH, it says the following error: "AN ERROR OCCURRED WHILE TRYING TO RESET THE BLUETOOTH RADIO. DID YOU MAKE SURE TO MODIFY THE /ETC/SUDOERS FILE?" Thank you!!!
