It’s been a couple of weeks now since Mugen sent me the 1800mAh, and 3600mAh Nokia N97 Extended Batteries for testing, and during this time, I have put together my results (After the break), which should answer most of your questions regarding the performance of these over the OEM 1500mAh BP-4L battery that comes with the N97.
The following tests were carried out after initially charging each battery, as per instructions for a full eight hours, and then, when reaching first battery low warning, the handset was put back on charge. This is very important that you follow these Mugen instructions, as to gain the full potential of these batteries. Failing to do so will result in lower, less performance.
23 Hours with heavy usage
40 Hours with medium usage
48 Hours with light usage
17 Hours with heavy usage
23 Hours medium usage
32 Hours with light usage
N97 OEM 1500mAh BP-4L battery
6 Hours heavy usage
10 Hours medium usage
18 Hours light usage
As you can see from the above, the 3600mAh is clearly the better performing battery, but at a cost of making the N97 very bulky, where as with the 1800mAh battery, you will gain up to eight hours extra over the OEM 1500mAh battery, and this keeps with the physical size of the OEM BP-4L battery.

Medium usage in my test case consisted of being connected 80% of the time to Wlan using Gravity, the twitter client, a couple of hours of music playback via built-in speakers, and 90 minutes of video playback via TV Out.
Also during this time, medium usage also consisted of using my Bluetooth BH-604 headset for an additional hour of music playback from the above hour via the N97 speakers. everal text messages, and around 20 minutes of call time was recorded with the above figures too. Several Bluetooth file transfers to laptop, and several photo uploads to Share On-Ovi also carried out within medium usage tests.
Heavy usage consisted of Music playback via Mobbler, the Last.fm music client, streaming, and scrobbling my music via wifi constantly.
Light usage basically consisted of 70% being on standby, 20% of the time being connected to email, web via wifi, and 10% calls, and text messages.

Conclusion - If you are looking for extra battery performance for your N97, E71, E90, or N810, as they share the same battery, I highly recommend the 1800mAh Mugen battery, but if you don’t mind adding bulk to your N97, the 3600mAh will add several hours to your N97’s performance, and even comes with an additional battery cover to accommodate the larger, physical sized battery. This larger back, also comes with its own built-in Stylus too. Please click on the bold, hyper-links for the specific pages on Mugen's website if you are interested in purchasing.

What about trying one in the N900?? I remember users getting the 1500 mAh battery from the N95 8gb in the N95-1 by grinding away some of the housing around the intrusive camera portion of the chassis. So evidently the N95-1/N900 battery should be able to be upgraded to the N97/E71 battery as long as it will fit. Alterations may be necessary, though. The good news is if it is, we can upgrade those N900 batteries with the Mugen 1800 mAh battery for some improved power specs. Anyone willing to try and check on getting an N97 battery into an N900? |
