YouTube has released a Beta version of their own FlashLite3.0
app that allows the users of several S60 devices from Nokia, and a couple
Sony/Ericsson devices as well to view the entire YouTube catalog, browse favorites and subscriptions associated with your good ol' standard YouTube account. Devices currently listed as compatible are the
Nokia 6110, 6120, E65, N73 and N95, and the S/E K800 and W880.
As always with first run beta software, there are a few issues with this release. I’ve been running the YouTube app on the N95 this morning- so my experience is limited to that device at the moment. For starters, one of the most annoying hitches with this release is that to hear the audio of a file, you must not be in Silent Mode, and your warning tones must be enabled- the later is quite nearly a deal breaker for me. There is also no option to view the video clips in full screen mode either- even if you swap to landscape mode via operating the slider or with the use of RotateMe. Though a couple of the icons and such are hidden when playing videos in landscape, it just does not fill the screen as EmTube users may be used to.

Other current annoyances include the fact that you must select a default access point in your RealPlayer streaming options, and that AP must match the selected AP of the YouTube app. Not a huge issue, but the fact that I’m unable to stream video via the YouTube app over my WiFi at home, despite the fact that other apps have no issue, is a bit of an issue for me. 3G and HSDPA work fantastically. This is of course very possibly an issue on my end. Another small issue is that the app takes a good five second count from when you attempt to launch the app to the point that it appears to acknowledge that it’s loading the app. I’m using the NAM N95 variant, and still waiting on speed improvements from demand paging- so this may not be an issue for other N95 variants, the N82 (which isn’t listed as compatible, though I see no reason why it wouldn’t work on that device) and the N73, as it has been updated to utilize Demand Paging.
By default, as S60 always like the user to be in control of their own device as far as how much access applications are granted, there are the standard requests for permission to Network access- though this can be set to “always allow” and you can select a default AP in the settings of the YouTube Mobile app in the App Manager. Permission must also be allowed to user data if you wish to upload videos with the app- which is one of the cool features of this app over such others as EmTube. I was not allowed to upload a video until I set the permissions in the App Manager- so this is something you might want to do right off the bat. If you’re unfamiliar with this process, the permission settings can be found by navigating to Menu> Tools> App. mgr. > 'YouTube'. An unsigned version of the application is available- however, most permissions cannot be set for that version.
Uploading a video to YouTube via this app is terrifically simple- just select ‘8’ on your keypad from the home screen and you’ll be presented with a list of all the videos that can be uploaded. The video’s folder location, name and size are all clearly displayed.
There are also plenty of handy shortcut keys available for your benefit-
1- New Search
3- Home screen
4- My Account- Favorites, Playlists, Subscriptions, My Videos, Received Videos
5- Popular Videos – Most Viewed, Top Rated, Recently Featured
7- Related Videos
8- Upload Video
0- Mute
#- Flag Video Options
The official efforts from Google and YouTube offer a really nice interface with pleasant transition effects and an overall polished presentation. The ability to upload videos is brilliant, as is the fact that you’re able to access nearly all the features of your YouTube account such as favorites, subscriptions, playlists and other items.
Even if you've been a loyal user of EmTube for the past couple of weeks (and really, even more so if that's the case), it's very much worth a moment of your time to grab this. As usual- I like to include a QR code to speed that process along for you. Scan it up with your Nokia and you'll be done installing the signed and official YouTube app within seconds. Happy YouTubing, Nokia User. :)
If you're having trouble with the QR code, you can visit http://www.youtube.com/yt_mobile_app on your desktop or punch in m.youtube.com/app into your phone's browser.

... What's really strange is that I'm not seeing the playback difficulties that everyone else is seeing. Playback is just fine for me- emTube can be pretty bad at times unless you allow the video to fully download. |
