New Firmwarew Updates - 5530 gets V11, N86 gets V20

N86whiteRecently I told you all about an upcoming firmware for the N86, which included Face Detection, and Im glad to report, that update is now available via Nokia Software Updater, Ovi Suite, and FOTA.  V20.115 also has a changelog, which is a surprise, this can be seen after the break.

The 5530 also received a new Firmware update this week, bringing the device up to date, with V11.0.054, however, this update is currently only available via Ovi Suite, and NSU.  I had tried my own 5530 to see if I could grab it OTA, but to no avail.  There is currently no Changelog for the 5530's new firmware, but earliy reports state that performance has been improved slightly, most noticable in the homescreen contacts scrolling.

5530Changelog for the N86 firmware is as follows.

Camera improvements:

* Improved still image quality
* Improved video quality
* Face detection added
* Red-eye removal added (Nokia note: “this is image processing which removes the red-eye. You need to be in red-eye reduction flash mode for it to be operational. Other flash modes it is disabled as there is a small shot to shot impact due to the extra image processing.”)
* New focus point indication – this shows where in the scene the camera is focussing
* Improved Close-up focus. (Nokia note: “As a result you will find in most situations you can focus much closer than before. The new focus point indication will also help in confirming which part of your subject is used for critical focus checking”)

Significant bug fixes to:

* Web
* Music store client
* RealPlayer
* Ovi Maps
* Here and Now
* N-Gage client
* Nokia Messaging

Both the N86, and 5530 handsets are equipped with UDP, (User Data Preservation), which basically means, you can update your firmware without having to worry about losing any of your handsets applications, games, photos, and videos, but more importantly, contacts etc.  Having said that, its always a wise move to backup anyway, just in case anything should go wrong, although FOTA is the safest way to update your devices software.

If you don’t already have the desktop application Nokia Software Updater, you can download it for free from here.  When you connect your device, select PC Suite Mode on your device.

N86 v20 firmware update bugs and dissapointments
Altho there are many additions and improvements to the n86 FW, i can also say that there are many disapointments too. For instance when theme effects is turned on and auto rotate is turned on, the auto rotate function is extremely sluggish and the screen is messed up for many seconds until it sorts itself out. The web browser now has nasty bugs where sometimes images don't display and empty placeholders are shown instead. Also sometimes when you go to input text into a text box on a web page you can only input numbers which is highly irritating. Nokia has a habit of making bad firmware updates, why did they feel the need to ruin the previous 11.043. they could of just changed the camera software and left the rest alone.
