Just a quick heads up to let you know, as expected, V21 is now available for the N97 unbranded, sim free models RM-505 variants, via Nokia Software Updater.
I'm just downloading now, and will update this post with my findings once completed. No need to back up if you wish to update your N97 as UDP is present, User Data Preservation retains your apps, and settings etc, however, to be on the safe side in case anything should go wrong, backing up is personally recommended. Thanks to Nokiausers forum member Itomovski for the heads up on this release.
Update #1: The first thing I noticed once the download, and installation of V21 was completed, was that it appeared to be displaying a slightly different theme, the keypad shown asking for my SIM pin looks different, but I couldn't put my finger on it. Sadly, there were no alphabetic lettering on any of the numbered keys, which some product codes were reporting with V20.
That different look that I mentioned earlier, it turns out its still the default theme as found in pervious firmware, NSeries 2, but if you take a look at your homescreen widgets now, they appear to be displayed as though the homescreen is in edit mode. Odd.
Update #2 I have noticed that the RAM management appears to have been tweaked a little, as its now possible for myself personally, to run the twitter application, Gravity, AND watch Youtube videos effortlessly, which was not at all possible for me on V20, as my particular N97 would either freeze up, or close down one of the open resourceful applications, which was very annoying. This seems to be a positive step with V21 at least. Let us know how you get on.
Now, although you don't have to, I personally will be hard resetting my N97, and formatting the mass memory, just to find out if it will make any difference to performance. Once done, and investigated, I will let you, our readers know if its worthwhile this time round to start a fresh or not.

Upgraded @ 8:40am GMT I did a update this morning, and thought sweet everything seems to be working ok... but did back up of contacts and calander entries to be on safe side... Got to work and noticed I didnt have any signal... thought no big deal will reset phone so turned on and off and same thing... Left for around 30minutes still nothing... So thought I would try *#7370# and what do you know everything worked... So downloaded latest Ovi app, facebook and accuweather... Got pop up to say do you want to allow connectio... Pressed yes and connection dies! Im on o2 and if I set to GSM mode only I get a signal but as soon as I switch back to to DUAL mode and try using facebook or the web I get no connection message!! Other things to note accuweather still doesnt work, will need to re-install ovi maps manually... Has anyone checked to see if the ringtone bug has been fixed? |

Connection issues seem to have been resolved.... Connection seem to have been resolved... Was probably a network issue despite o2 saying there was no issues in my area... Still need to download all my old apps and see how the multi-tasking is... although I didnt have too much problem with the old update... unfortunatily the firmware still lacks any real upmph and in my opinion ovi store should be redesigned from scracth! |

V2.1 could be the one ! Installed last night, did hard reset but didn't format E (phone died at weekend and spent 8 hours re-building) Seems to have improved greatly, 2500 music tracks still 'seen' and with album art (usually have to re-load or delete private files) Touch seems smoother and everything seems to be working quicker. Only gripe is Ovi store, having to pay again for a couple of apps I'd bought (two days before) had issue before, and despite e-mails unable to resolve so intend sourceing all apps elswhere in future. But as long as N97 stays stable and works as it does now, I think V2.1 has given me the phone I 'Originally' thought I was buying ! We'll See ............ |
