Ovi Maps Navigation on the Go. Portrait or Landscape?

    Posted in: Maps
      |  by: Micky

Nokia Beta Labs are asking everyone who uses Nokia Maps Navigation if they use their Nokia device in portait mode, or in landscape mode whilst driving.

They have a simple survey that would like everyone to participate, so head across to Nokia Beta Labs to let them know here, or go direct to the short survey here.

Beta Labs are also interested in as to why you use your device in your particular orientation, be it something not displaying as it should of your device, for example, call screen not working in landscape etc.

You can let the team know your issues in their discussions area on Beta Labs here.

Noteworthy Apps – Borg for facebook & CNN News

    Posted in: Applications
      |  by: Micky

A couple of new applications I have been rocking recently on my Nokia devices are well worth checking out.  The first application is called “Borg” and is a very well done facebook client with a pleasing UI, and smooth User Experience.

Borg - Facebook client , no server proxy calls, place and checkin integrated with Ovimap, photo and video upload, browse news feed, wall, friends, groups, events , messages, public pages and posts, more on the way. (version 1.1 still in beta and free). You can download Borg from Ovi Store here, or should we say, Nokia Store? ;)

Next up, the popular News reader application for CNN has arrived on Symbian devices via Ovi Store too, and this is well worth checking out too.

To find out more on the CNN client, head across to Ovi Daily App where its covered in detail.  My early impressions on both of these apps are that, Borg is a superb facebook alternative app for your Nokia, whilst the CNN app, although functional, is not quite as polished as it could be when compared to CNN on other platforms.

Ovi Branding to be Replaced with Nokia from July 2011

    Posted in: Ovi
      |  by: Micky

Nokia’s Official Blog, Nokia Conversations have today let us know that The evolution of Nokia and Ovi will result in the Ovi Branding being dropped and replaced by Nokia from July this year 2011.

Starting with first services on some of the new Nokia devices in July and August, Ovi services will be rebranded as Nokia services in a transition expected to continue into 2012. Each of the services under the Ovi umbrella will simply be rebranded as Nokia, with no planned disruption to the service roadmaps.

Nokia’s EVP and Chief Marketing Officer, Jerri DeVard explains the shift:
We have made the decision to change our service branding from Ovi to Nokia. By centralizing our services identity under one brand, not two, we will reinforce the powerful master brand of Nokia and unify our brand architecture – while continuing to deliver compelling opportunities and experiences for partners and consumers alike.

Head across to Nokia Conversations for the full press release on these changes.

    Posted in: Applications
      |  by: Micky

Nimbuzz 3.01 for Nokia Symbian phones is ready to download. You can get it from Nimbuzz.com.

Are you excited? Good, because you have 9 awesome reasons to be .

    Here is what’s new:

    • Improved Call Quality – thanks to peer to peer call connectivity.
    • More space for your chats – for full screen chatting experience.
    • Chat bubbles – that bring an iPhone like chat experience to your (Nokia) Symbian phone.
    • Custom wallpapers in the chat screen – choose a color or an image from your gallery to display as background for your chats.
    • Custom color for the text font in your chat screen
    • Call Quality Indicator – so you can check the expected call quality before you make a call.
    • Free Avatars – choose new and exciting avatars for your profile picture from N-World
    • Last Seen Online – shows you the last time your friend was seen on Nimbuzz.
    • Fast group selection – straight from your contact list.

The new improved call quality is possible thanks to our new peer to peer calling system, which aims to make a direct connection between the two mobile devices. Your calls will be connected faster and the probability of dropped calls enormously reduced. We are also working on bringing HD call quality in the next version .

The call quality indicator checks how good/strong your internet connection is and displays the expected call quality. This information will appear in the calling screen, right before you place the call.

Head across to the Nimbuzz blog to find out more exciting new features of what to expect with this brand new release.

    Introducing LinkedIn for Symbian Devices

    Posted in: Software
      |  by: Micky

LinkedIn is a well known Social service for users to share their professional experiences in their line of work, build connections, and even help users change careers, and look for that new job.

Recently Nokia launched their mobile client of LinkedIn, and was created using Qt with the LinkedIn Platform, the company’s development toolkit to allow programmers to access the network from external applications.

I had a lot of difficulty installing this on my E7 due to various issues with the Qt packages I use, and to this day, i still can’t install it, but remember I do Beta test a lot of things, so this maybe isolated just to me, and few others.

N8 installation went fine however, and having had a play around with this app, I’m happy to report that it’s impressive! Very quick with a pleasant UI, and smooth User Experience, which matches the likes of the LinkedIn app on iOS, and that’s saying something.

Head across to Ovi Store to download LinkedIn for Symbian today. It’s free too!
