Nokia Windows Phone to head iOS and Blackberry

    Posted in: Nokia Phones
      |  by: Nick

According to the analyst company IDC, Microsofts alliance with Nokia could make way for Windows Phone to be ahead of competition such as the hugely popular iOS and Blackberry – at least in around 3 and a half years time. Their latest research apparently predicts that the Windows Phone 7 will struggle in the market until the new set of Nokia Windows Phones are released in larger volumes.

IDC analyst Ramon Llamas wrote in a press release; “Until Nokia begins introducing Windows Phone-powered smartphones in large volumes in 2012, Windows Phone 7/Windows Mobile will only capture a small share of the market,” the research note reads, “as the release of Mango-powered smartphones are not expected to reach the market until late 2011.”

If all goes well with the new Microsoft and Nokia partnership, the firm expects the Windows Phone to have around a 20 percent stake of the smartphone market by the year 2015 – that means it will have a larger market share than iOS who are expected to have a 16.9 share and the Blackberry, which is anticipated to have a 13.4 percent share – and of course the Android phone is predicted be the market leader with a whopping 43.8 percent share.

The hotly anticipated partnership is not yet even formed, but with firms like IDC expecting big things from the partership it looks like the next few years could be big for Nokia and Microsoft. The way the phones are marketed will be a huge factor in the success of this alliance and indeed the Nokia Windows Phone platform, but only time will tell if the success will turn the smartphone market on its head.

I personally believe they’re on the right tracks, but whether or not it will be as successful as predicted i’m not all too sure – I hope so though, if not only for a better and more competitive smarphone market, after all competition usually develops in to technology advances in these sort of markets.

How do you think things will pan out between the two companies? Do you see the Windows Phone having a market share as predicted by the IDC, or is this all too confident thinking?

Nokia N8 Dropped From Balcony Hits Concrete 3 Meters Below – Survives!!

    Posted in: Nokia Phones
      |  by: Micky

Woke up this morning carrying out my usual routine of reading emails, and RSS feed, and then when I fired up twitter, said Good Morning to everyone, when my good friend Richard, @Sheridan01 replied and said Good Morning back, I asked how he was, and I got the following reply….

    rd

Now knowing Richard has an N8 in his possession my heart was in my mouth, so asked him which phone he had accidentally dropped 3 meters off his balcony, and my fears were confirmed, he had dropped the aluminium cased Nokia N8.!! Seeing that the new iPhone smashes its glass when dropped from knee height, I was starting to fear the worse.

Of course, the next question was obvious, I asked if there was any damage, to which Richard replied with an impressive answer..

    rd

Going by the above answer, I thought to myself, ok, it probably landed on a soft surface, maybe grass, but no, it actually landed on hard concrete stone paving. Check after the break for damage report, and photos..

    Officially Confirmed – The New Nokia N8 12MP Shooter – €370

    Posted in: Nokia Phones
      |  by: Micky

For those of you out there eager to get your hands on the long awaited 12MP Nokia N8, I can share with you today the Official price of this latest Symbian^3 device from the Holy Grail in Finland.  The N8 will cost €370 Euros before Tax & Subsidies.

    n8

This price has been Officially confirmed to me directly from Nokia, and I have to say, its a mighty fine price point too, and I can see this selling very well indeed. So much so, I would say that anyone who already has say an 5800 device from Nokia, would certainly see this as a superb upgrade, because lets face it, the 5800 is a great device, but sadly it was let down in the camera department.

The N8 will also be a keen favorite with many a user who’s main focus (no pun intended) is a great point and shoot camera.  I can also confirm that the N8′s camera is simply the best camera I have ever used on a Nokia device, and I have tried them all.

Its so fast, words can not describe my initial thought when I first tried  it out.  The focus time blew me away.

1aWe all love concept devices, and we have seen our fair share of them over the years, and many would like to think Nokia is taking on board what these designers, and concept creators like Jeremy put together, reflecting what people would like to see in future Nokia devices.

Jeremy’s Nokia Kinetic Concept can be seen after the break.

One of my favorite concept Nokia devices was the one below, which obviously is aimed at the Social Networking marketplace, with dedicated live twitter, and facebook notification buttons.

Nokia N8 Surround Sound & Better than DVD Film – Dolby Labs In Depth Q&A

    Posted in: Nokia Phones
      |  by: Micky

dlThanks to Jay Montano of My Nokia Blog for pointing this great TechRadar Exclusive Interview out with Dolby Lab’s Senior Technical Marketing Manager, Jonathan Jowitt, who goes into great depth on the technologies used in the upcoming Nokia N8, that bring better than DVD quality film viewing to your hands.

Jowitt goes onto to answer many questions from TechRadar’s Steve May, like about the type of compression and encode/decode technology being used to squeeze a big-screen home theatre experience into N8.

The answer to this question, Jowitt says, ‘The video file format is MPEG-4, there’s nothing special about it. It uses traditional video encoding and traditional Dolby encoding in the audio domain.
Thee handset (which has 16GB of internal memory) would probably store thirty or forty ninety-minute-type movies, you’ll get a good thirty films on the  device. So we see the N8 as a kind of portable hardware version of a kind of disc player… a Blu-ray disc player actually, because it’s slightly better quality than you get out of a DVD player.
    ’

For the full interview, and to get a better insight into what the N8 has to off in the entertainment side of things, your in for a treat, head over to TechRadar here, to find out more.

Damian Dinning Nokia N8 Photo & Video Roundup

    Posted in: Nokia Phones
      |  by: Micky

ddDamian Dinning, Nokia’s top Optic’s expert has shared his experiences with the Upcoming 12mp Shooter, the Nokia N8, showing the true capabilities of the optics, sensor, and quality of the images, and videos that the N8 can capture without breaking into a sweat.

In two parts, the first part, Damian focuses (no pun intended), on the photos that the N8 produces, one of them can be seen below, the butterfly is simply amazing, checkout the quality of this particular image when zoomed into which reveals so much detail, its jaw dropping.

Check out many more of these great photos, and of course to see what Damian has to say about his experience whilst taking these shots, head across to Nokia Conversations, Nokia’s Official Blog.

    12mp

Onto Damian Dinning’s part two where he now shows the video recording, zoom functionality, and so so much more.  Damian goes into great depth in expressing the technologies used in the N8′s Camera, and its highly recommended reading, so grab yourself a drink, get comfortable, and head across to Damian Dinning’s Part 2 over on Nokia Conversations.

    Quote from Damian…

“Let’s consider the benefits of the sensor/optics combination a little further. In good light recording, we take full advantage of the high resolution sensor. Through the downscaling and binning process from the 4000×3000 pixel sensor to 1280×720 video pixels, any visual noise that may have required some degree of noise reduction is effectively filtered out, therefore allowing us to process the video with noise reduction disabled. This means in reasonable lighting you won’t see any noise in the video during play back. This has allowed us to retain incredible levels of detail rather than losing it to noise reduction. It’s also allowed us to implement digital zoom which is virtually as good as optical zoom”.

Techno Buffalo Video Demo of Symbian^3 (Unstable)

    Posted in: Nokia Phones
      |  by: Micky

In this latest video from Techno Buffalo, its very clear that the software on this particular device is my no means ready for primetime, and is a totally unfair on the unreleased, upcoming new Nokia device, the E7, or an N8 QWERTY variant. Please do not judge this device from this particular video demo.

As Techno Buffalo show you through the Symbian^3 software, things don’t go quite as planned, which issues of lag, and worse when the camera application is attempted to be demoed, it simply does not open, which then ends the video abruptly.

Its quite painful viewing to see this kind of video being pushed out to the public, and its very unfair to upcoming potencial buyers, and of course, the Nokia team behind the development of this device. Checkout the video below, but please do bare in mind that the software on this particular Nokia prototype is far far from stable.
