What size SD card?

Hi,

I have a new N95 (3 network) as an upgrade. I am confused as to what size card is supported in the N95 (i think 3 are N95-1). It is using my old 1 gb fine, but what can I put in it.

cheers

8GB micro sd card. 8GB is the highest out at the moment, but it will be able to take 16GB when they come out.

Hi, can i just stick my oar in for a second,

Without a card my phone is happyily displaying 23mb of free ram.

If i stick my 8gb card which is FULL of pics, videos, music etc then the ram goes down to 11 to 14mb.

It would appear that the phone isnt comfortable with that many files soooooo

a 16gb card surely would be even worse?

When the n95 came out, i think the biggest card was 2gb and that was probably the size nokia tested. I dont think the n95 can cope with a FULL 8gb card.

Why else would my memory drain when i put the card in?

Its recently been formatted. Only data files are on the card. The phone was formatted also due to the V30 update.

I guess the 16gb card would be ok if you sticking on a couple of 2gb films etc, but you try filling it with pics n mp3s... disaster!

mark my words lol

Mr Bob, this was recently covered in another topic. But you're right the RAM does reduce to the page filing system, and the scanning of the card for instant access when you open a large capacity card.

Nokia designed the phones to work with a certain capacity, it's just Scandisk were the first to use the Micro SDHC technology to use bigger capacity cards in the same way a 2GB one operates.

So, yes it will get worse for N95-1 with 16 / maybe 32 GB cards.

But the newer the Nokia devices are able to handle bigger cards with ease, the new N85 comes supplied from Nokia with an 8GB card. So the access to the card by the phone is instant, and the ram needed to run the card isn't under pressure.

Using an N95-1 with a 16gb card with 5000+ different files is like pulling a house with a motorbike. How ever, the newer Nokia's are more like a Big torque 4x4 instead :)

Well I seem to be lucky. My 8GB card has 1085MB of free space left on it but I always have 25MB + of free RAM (According to Y-Tasks). The gallery is a leetle slow to open but there are 780 photos in there plus loads of video clips so I won't complain.

Roll on 16GB microSDHC !

Yeah thas quiet true, it must depend alot on what files you have on the memory card. The structure of the folders on the card. And also what files are running at the time of the RAM Check.

Thanks Guys, that has cleared a lot up for me. So the discussion states capacities upto 8gb, but expect a performance hit. Sandisk are the best choice. Get the capacity you think you require and accept any trade off of performance, for me 4gb sounds about right.

cheers

Bill, It's not that noticeable at all. I have an 8GB card running and never had any RAM or Memory low issues. I really do think it's really down to the structure of the files on your card and what files you have.

I have around 15 albums on there, and only 200 or so images. My card access instantly all the time, every time.

I took a few screen shots of my phones RAM situaton with 5GB used on an 8GB card.

As you can see I am running 23 MB of Ram on normal idle useage.

I've now removed the memory card, look at the RAM useage now.

So by using the 8GB memory card it uses around 2MB more ram. Hardly anything to worry over with 56MB available.
