Is it that expensive?

Hi,

I sat in bed last night and used my home wiresless network to download YouTube for my mobile and watch 2 music videos. The phone kept losing the signal so I tried several times. After it eventually worked I woke up in the morning with text messages from three saying I'd spent £18.50!!!!

Is this true? I thought it was free to use your wifi connection to access the internet?
Is there anyway to get this money back? Or do I have to learn from my mistakes????

Thanks

Chris

from the looks of it chris, you seem to have used ur 3g connection by mistake to connect to the internet, not your home wifi.

Thanks.

I thought this might be the case but I've set the preferences to 'always ask which connection to use' and always choose my wifi home internet connection.

Can't understand this? Could it be beauce when I went to the youtube.com site I chose to download the youtube for phones application to download? It now appears as an application on my phone? Would effect it in any way?

Thanks

Chris

Hi,

Thanks for that but I'm a bit miffed that they've charged me £18.50 for that usuage to start with.

Oh and... surely connecting to my home router shouldn't cost me a penny?

Has anyone got any ideas how I could have been charged when I was using the wifi connection of my home router? Are there some settings I could change or need to check in order to make sure this doesnt happen again.

I only watched Kylie and the Sugababes music videos on youtube and got stung with an £18.50 bill!!!

Thanks

Chris... I just tried the same thing as you, went to youtube.com (using W-Fi) and downloaded the youtube app to my phone and then played about a minute of a Kylie video (that was as much as I could stand!) ;)

I saw that when I selected to download the youtube app, the phone switched from a wiFi connection to a 3G one. After exiting the browser as instructed and starting the app from the menu, I had no choice of connection-type and it operated in 3G, once I selected a video.

On checking my log I found that the app download was 260KB and that in total I'd used 1.7 MB for the app download and about a minute of video. I guess this explains the costs that you incurred if you don't have a data-plan... At least they let you know about it, had they not, you could have run up a massive bill if you'd continued to use the program, so praise where it's due, to 3 in this case.

In future, I suggest that you use emTube instead, it stays on WiFi when it's set to it, gives good picture and sound quality and moreover, you can record the clips you've watched, rather than keep paying to see them again! :)

In YouTube app it displayed small icons top left corner of screen showing 3G and data exchange arrows in this instance.

Spook thanks for that dude!

Hey I'm trying to get through to Three and ask them why I didnt have the choice to whether or not to connect to their 3g network.

I find it unbelievable that you don't have an option whether or not to connect.

Are they allowed to do that even though the connection was wifi?

Thanks
