Didn't get round to opening up the laptop but I started putty on my phone, logged onto my Linux server and pinged the phone from there.

I got a steady 3 to 6 ms response. Not sure if this has anything to do with the phone being active on the network though.

What's your phone doing when you are pinging it? i.e. what's running to keep the network connection alive?

It's Broke?

Did you know that your Nokia comes with a 2 year warranty? Did you know that Carphone Warehouse are Nokia Repair Centres?
Damage from normal use: wobbly slider, broken keys, quiet earpiece etc... will be repaired for free, and usually the same day if you take it to a big store!
