Using VOIP on the N95
*Sorry I wasn't sure where in the forum this should go*
I'm currently using the IP telephony feature on my N95 to make cheap calls but like the idea of trying Vyke which I have read is supposed to be in the download section as they have a voip app? I haven't seen that but prefer to use the built in feature on the N95. Has anyone here used vyke with their N95? I'm mainly thinking of via the ip telephony on the phone rather than the app... Here's the other thing - my peak calls cost 40p or 50p a minute on my plan (cheapest one) but I have unlimited data... I've noticed that voip providers tend to have a part of their site where you can enter two numbers and they'll connect the call. I'm wondering if this would work or if anyone has tried it - in theory I'm thinking it'd let you call internationally really cheap at peak rates? What I don't understand is whether you get charged for the connection to your phone and the phone you're calling or just the one you're calling? (I'd guess it'd be the latter)... |

I have been using voipcheap for my voip calling and it works very well with the built in sip settings. This Vyke looks fairly interesting..I'm going to look a little closer at it when I have a few mins..the free txt feature looks like it could be useful. I'd prefer to enter sip settings manually, rather than their "wizard" however-I don't think that would be a problem using the sip.vyke.com settings. If you sign up for it I'd be interested in the results

I'm going to see if I can configure the settings manually as I'm worried the app will take over your phone like Fring or Truphone... |

I put a tutorial post that's been stickied in the General forum. You may be able to use that procedure, using the sip.vyke.com as the domain

I'm setting up a new profile for vyke now and will see what it's like... I've installed the Vyke lite app rather than the full one and rebooted my phone. It didn't automatically load at startup like Fring and doesn't seem to have added a voip profile by itself. It seems to be quite non-intrusive. You load the app as and when you want to use it and can have it minimized to run in the background. It also allows you to check the cost of a call before you make it. For me a call from my mobile to a UK landline would be 11p per minute. |

I had a go at entering all the settings but registration failed. On the vyke site you can download a configurator which sets up your voip settings for you. Seems to do the same job as entering them manually as you don't even need another app, it uses the built in internet telephony. If you want to enter all the settings manually for Vyke though, here they are (taken from the profile configured by Vyke):
Profile name: Vyke Service profile: IETF Default access point: <your choice> Public user name: sip:<Vyke user id>@sip.vyke.com Use compression: No Registration: When needed Use security: No Proxy server address: sip:sip.vyke.com Realm: sip.vyke.com User name: <Vyke user id> Password: <Vyke password> Allow loose routing: Yes Transport type: UDP Port: 5060 Registrar server address: sip:sip.vyke.com Realm: sip.vyke.com User name: <Vyke user id> Password: <Vyke password> Transport type: UDP Port: 5060 |

Sounds like a good service but I'm wondering what the advantage would be over voipbuster or voipcheap? Both of those have free calling to many countries. Maybe the text feature of vyke?

Voipcheap - 120 freedays for 10 euros credit. Limited to 300 minutes but no connection charge. Calls to mobiles 7p a minute Voipbusterpro - 365 freedays for 10 euros (now 15 - about £13) credit but 3.9 eurocents (approx 3.5p) connection charge for each call. Calls to UK mobiles 17p a minute. Vyke - Credit doesn't expire, you can get 1USD free trial then top up with just 10USD (about £6) and each call made to a landline costs 4 cents (approx 2.5p) with no limit on calls made or duration. Calls to UK mobiles are 9p per minute. I'm not 100% sure of the details above, please correct me if I'm wrong... I've just checked my virginmedia home phone bill and it shows over 1000 minutes of calls made (mostly my other half!) Last edited by martyp; 11-08-2008 at 08:48 PM. |

This would be great if it worked for UK numbers:

The following might be of interest to those looking to set up a voip provider on their N95 or even landline:
VoIP Configuraton for VoipBuster, VoipStunt, InternetCalls, VoipCheap, SIPDiscount betamax price comparison It helps decide between the different Betamax voip companies out there... I think voipcheap seems to be the best for UK calling: 10 Euros (12.5 inc vat) gets 120 'freedays', 300 minutes week. No connection charges and the lowest rate for calling UK mobiles - 6p a minute...
