question regarding VoiP

Hey I just got my n95 and I want to get in on this whole VoiP thing. From my understanding you can connect to the internet with your phone through wi-fi correct? if so, is there a way to use that in conjuction with a Voip service where you dont have to pay anything except your internet bill? i ask because i'm in the philippines and we don't have those carrier deals such as the unlimited data plans from cingular/sprint (i used to be in the USA and had cingular).

i guess if i have to boil it down, i'm wondering if i can do it for free or DIRT CHEAP (haha) through my wi-fi.

viop is internet phone calls. Instead of using your gprs (cell) network to make calls, you use the internet. Its like skype and fring.

you can connect to the internet through wifi, like if you have a wireless router at home, or a hotspot.

You can use Skype but then you have to pay for Skype out if you want to be able to call a phone number. Or if you call another skype user...then that would be free. I am in the US and I use Truphone on my N95....I can call for free using my wifi anywhere within US/Canada.

Truphone or you can try one of the betamax providers such as voipbuster, voipcheap, etc. With those you can call many countries for free for a number of freedays, like 90, when you deposit 10euro in the account

Now this is strange....I was gonna respond to your last post in which you said that Truphone is most expensive unlike other betamax providers??

In any case, I have been using Truphone for the last few months. I have signed up with Truphone and they have provided me with my own personal number with 773 area code. When I use internet call with my N95 and wifi, I get the calls through. I cannot call outside US/Canada though...I get a voice message saying I don't have enough credits.

Is Truphone free to use or do I have to by credits? I tried it locally and it seemed to work - but they give me a free $1 credit.

I have it set to use my cell phones internet - I want to use it for long distance calls - is it really free to use?

Thanks,

Tmuldoon

Like I have said above, I have been given my own personal phone number and with that, I can call anywhere within US/Canada for free. I was initially given $2 credit as well..but I blew it up in test calls overseas. :)
