3D .svg icons?

Hi all,
Can anyone give me a heads-up on creating 3D icons for the s60v3 platform?
I've dabbled but seem to be going backwards here...
Already using inkscape - which is ok (for the most part) - but i seem to be hitting a wall
concerning 'effects':applying gradients et al.
Everything looks fine,until i port the icons (svg) over into carbide,then all the applied effects seem to disappear and i'm left with a rather sad looking 2D bitmap affair.
Not great...unless childlike,unfinished-looking icons float peoples boats these days ;)

Also...how do i associate icons with various applications?
