I'm not sure if this has already been posted as having searched I can't find any mention of it. I wonder if anyone else has come across this issue.
I recently set up a friends new N95-1 on uk voda for him and transferred his contacts for him. The firmware is v21 but i have also noticed it on v20. I was using vcf files from one older phone and vcfs that were part of a WAB file also. This is the native format that the N95 appears to back up to. The name of the contact is picked up by the PC suite software when contacts are selected (browsing the phone directly via USB in pc suite mode) but some of the contacts show as having no numbers associated with the name. When clearly there are numbers on the phone. From what i have worked out it's not related to the way the numbers are stored (ie format) as they are all in the correct + format or related to how the contact is named, as there are no duplicated and those with 2 names are all 1st name, last name. But appears to be related to the detail name of the number as far as i can remember. I think if they are just labelled Telephone the PCS doesn't pick up the number. All the numbers were backed up to the memory card and when viewed as vcf in there and opened the number could be viewed. Reciprocally a similar issue occurs when opening a vcf file due to the naming of the detail. Sometimes numbers that can be viewed in the pc suite contacts in the phone do not appear when windows (xp) is used to open the vcf file. The number still exists within the vcf file though, you can test it by deleting the phone contact and restoring from the memory card. The number that cannot be read in the vcf in xp when imported into contacts can be read in the phone. The phone seems to read all of the vcf file while windows and the pc suite each have different bits they miss. This also ties into using MS outlook to sync address book with contacts, i tested this also and I would definitely avoid using outlook as you could be losing numbers without even knowing it. If you're working with a large contact database as i was here with about 500 contacts many with several numbers associated with each, it's very hard to check everything. Idid find that outlook did lose several numbers of certain contacts and from what i can gather it relates to the way it uses and reads the vcf files. Edit In addition the only way i found to make sure you don't lose any numbers when importing or transferring with vcf files is to use the pc suite. If you have vcf files and then copy them directly to the memory card (other/contacts) then restore from the memory card then some of the numbers may not be transferred because of the detail name of the number. But if you bring them in via pc suite then it appears that those numbers to transfer across and can be read by the phone. Last edited by lucid; 06-26-2008 at 01:09 PM. |
