That isn't very helpful. What protocol does it use? Jabber? It's own? etc. I am going to give a stab at jabber/aim and see what happens

The IM feature that comes on the Nokia phone has been around for a few years but I have not heard of a single person using it. I know of no one who knows who provides such a service. IM needs the "network" effect. More begets more. Without critical mass, an IM system will flop.

My E71 comes with Microsoft Windows Live Messenger on the SD card. I believe you can also download it for free from Nokia. It works reasonably well given the limitation of the screen size. Just install it and you are ready to go.

Why use third party applications when there is a Nokia/Microsoft Windows Live Messenger? If you face problems, is the phone, the phone software, the messaging software or the messaging server that is causing it? You will have a lot of running around to do.
