VoIP on N95? Anyone tried it yet?

Hey there, I know its early days but just wondered if anyone had any advice on getting some Skype type software on the N95?

As far as I know Skype don't have it for Symbian phones yet...

I've been told Fring might work but I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

Fring/EQO do Skype but I think you need to leave your PC on with Skype running for it to work.

Fring

I had fring on my last S60 handset which picked up on my skype contacts. Wasn't very useful at the time as my former tariff didn't allow me much download but as a proof of concept it worked fine.

Haven't installed on my 95 yet but I see no reason why it shouldn't work and intend to install this evening. - T mobile web n walk frowns on it's use so I'll probably only use it through my wifi access point rather than across t-moby.

You don't need your PC to be for it to work though.

Thanks - i look forward to hearing the results when you do get the chance to try it out.

I hear Skype is definately developing for the N95 and its due out soon. But from what you have said - Fring looks to be a good alternative.

Well thats weird. I did do a quick search and found this though:

http://www.fring.com/about/applicati...guide_sym9.asp

Looks like it says N95 on there to me - maybe they are still polishing it since the phone has only just been released?

Fring will work (eventually) on N95. I am 100% sure of that, there is no reason for fring to not work. The operating system is not new, the phone is new but is based in S60 so it will work. I am sure they are just fixing the software to "say" during the installation that it's working with the N95. Just to make sure you guys should send an email to fring, they will reply in no more than 24h.

I use Fring a lot on my N73 (yes, you do have to keep the desktop+skype on) and I like it. I only have EDGE (unlimited traffic), no 3G and still I can talk just like it's a regular cellphone line. I actually use the SIP (you can get SIP accounts in soo many parts of the web today) so I do not have to keep my skype at home on, and the SIP account I have it's cheaper than skype Out anyway. You can call any number you wish and some SIP even offer free call to all US & Canada. So I end up paying 5.99$/month for unlimited internet and with fring + sip I also get unlimted voice calls :)

Pseudo, if you didn't already, you can also give it a try with Cingular, I tested it a few times and works just fine. Plus with SIP you can get any phone number you want (US, UK, etc .....)

Right. I might give it a try just for the geek factor. I've got a great plan with tons of minutes that I never use up- so I've got probably a thousand minutes banked in rollover by now...

Would be slick to have a UK number too. Can I get a Finland number? That would seal the deal for me... I mean- a pseudofinn needs a pseudo Finnish number, doesn't he? ;)

So I emailed Fring and here's what they said:

"We are hoping to support Nokia N95 in the next few weeks, once it is supported, we will announce it on our website.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Thank you,
Vadim.
fring support team.
"

Next few weeks it is then i suppose...
