Someone just tried to unlock my N95

I'm going on holiday in May and needed my N95-1 unlocking from orange so i can use a cheaper sim while over there. Just come back from a phone shop a while ago after they couldn't unlock it.

Apparantly they would have to flash it back to my original firmware, ie the old rusty V10 it came with to be able to do this! Is there any truths to this? He wanted £15, and i didn't pay him anything cos he couldn't/wouldn't backup and restore my phone for me!

Does updated also add newer and harder to unlock software onto the phones?

I think it may be true and pretty sure I heard similar when after mine unlocking.
It isnt a big deal though is it? you could just upgrade it back?

I ended up phoning t-mobile and getting the unlock code direct from them, I dont know how orange are but I think it is against the law not to give it. Ring them and see

How would they downgrade the firmware?

perhaps I'm not getting your situation properly but lets see if this helps

I got an N95-1 3 weeks ago off ebay - Orange network ...v10 or v11 I forget which,

sync'd contacts ONLY to pc but also backed up phone to memory card,

taken it to a phone shop just outside my local underground, unlocked it for £10, no problems,

debranded with nemesis and updated firmware to v20 with NSU,

daftly tried to restore phone from memory card, phone was bugged out and couldn't display the dialing interface,

did a hard reset and restored ONLY contacts from outlook and last week updated firmware to v21

if that doesn't apply how about this?

when updating to v21 last week, my phone switched off and was bricked!

i took it to a phone shop and they asked for £20 to reflash it, I refused,

checked nokias website for nearest repair centre took my bricked phone with an orange product code on sticker but a 3aus code written through Nemesis and v20 firmware and the guy reflashed it with v21 for free

...apparently all N95-1's are technically automatically under warranty due to their age relative to the official release date. (don't ask me, I didn't get a warranty off ebay anyway)

I'd advise you sync your contacts ONLY and maybe messages to your pc, unlock, debrand and update by yourself? restoring your entire phone/system settings across 2 different firmwares is asking for trouble, reinstall all your programs again.

To unlock an N95 you need :-
1) flashing box to downgrade to V11 and backup certificates/lock data in case of a problem. (I use Jaf Box)
2) A dejan hammer clip or TP board (or MTBox,BB5/dejan unlocking tp box).
3) A Torx screwdriver to dismantle your phone.
4) an elastic band to hold things together during unlocking.
5) good eyesight and a very steady hand to connect the wires to extremely small testpoints,
(I used very fine sewing needles rather than direct soldering.)
enter the unlocking code (using any unlocking code) *#pw+111111111111111+1# will do(pressing unlock on the tp kit then pressing the last # quickly can be tricky).
6) then upgrade firmware again.

It's a job for VERY experienced phone fiddlers, it took me less than 2 mins to unlock my N95.

Best thing to do is contact your service provider and buy the unlock code.
It's a lot safer and no need for downgrading/dismantling.

A lot of market stalls and dodgy phone shops will do the unlocking but you will have to do your own backup and restore.

(the cost of the code from the network provider is usually the same or very slighly dearer than these guys charge.)

Orange/vodaphone/3 usually charge around £15

Call your provider you know it makes sense.

got my N95 8gb unlocked via Voda the other day for free !!

Just phoned 'em up telling them the signal was crap and I needed another sim when at work to make calls etc, he gave me the procedure over the phone & job's a good 'un !!

Certainly worth a call to your provider, try using the same reasoning as me and see what they say !!

LOL was just going to suggest the exact same thing, my brother in law used the exact same reason with Orange. It took a couple of phone calls though before they would do it for free.

I can't understand how the phone shop concerned intended to downgrade the firmware as if you try to do this it will either fail or brick the phone :S
And concerning warranty for Euro/UK handsets , you do not need a retailer warranty as all handsets shipped for europe by Nokia are entered onto the Warranty database prior to shipping which is valid for 25 months !
Any OFFICIAL Nokia service centres will have to check this database prior to a repair in order to get Nokia to pay them for it !
If the phone has invalid or no recorded warranty the repair centre CANNOT get payment from Nokia and are therefore unlikely to conduct the repair for you unless you pay for it .
Physical damage ,liquid damage and unauthorised engineering will all invalidate the warranty and be displayed on the database warning all Care Points that they will not get paid(by Nokia) for any repair they do on the handset either Mechanical or Software
