When you say you 'disable' it - do you mean you are turning off WiFi scanning at the main screen? With that switched off it should not be connecting to ANY WiFi network.

The good news is that it's normal to show the icon on the display. The bad news is you may be mistaken. Try:
Menu<tools<settings<connection<Wireless LAN<Show WLAN Availability. Choose either never (which will rid the icon unless actually connected) or an interval of minutes. The box of squares represents that wi-fi's available, not a connection! The Nokia's telling you wi-fi's present. When you turned off the feature on stand-by, you turned off the wireless scanning and wizard set up. Similar but different. You'll need that to actually establish and create a new wireless lan connection. Make sense? T |

This can be caused by a combination of things. You may have left an application that is using your internet connection running. Just disabling WiFi scanning on the main screen will have no effect on this. You may for example have left the web browser open, or the download application, or the maps application, etc. Just pressing the hang-up button does not close all applications, in fact sometimes you have to go to the options menu of that application and go to 'Exit'. Otherwise your data connection might remain open. Hold down the menu button for a couple of seconds, this shows you a list of running applications, have a look and see what you left open, then close it.

Is there anyway of inputting a longer incrypted WEP key - say if the WEP is 128bit instead of 16? My one at work is too long to enter into the phone....

How are you going about setting up the access point? If I were you, try using the stand-by mode wizard, search for your network, then enter in the key. I've done 3lines of random numbers and had no issue. Doubt anybody would have over a 30 character password but it worked. Give that a shot instead! Let us know.

Tried that didn't work. I don't even think it picked up the network when searching for it. My phone olnly allows 1.5 lines of characters on the WEP key
