Firmware version

Hey

my contract on t-mobile UK finishes next month and im going to upgrade my sony ericsson k800i which ive had for years to the n95 8GB and ive been reading that some network providers dont let you upgrade to the latest firmware or dont have it available etc.

does t-mobile have the latest firmware?

I always thought you just needed to go to nokia and upgrade from them? but have been reading that its the network your on that does it.......

Basically, there's a code embedded in the chip on the N95. When you connect it upto the PC to update, it knows which network you are on and then goes and fetches their particular modified version of the firmware, whatever version they are on.

You can hack the phone and change the code to a generic one (debranding) which will allow you to overwrite the t-mobile firmware with the lovely clean vanilla Nokia version. Lots of detail on the forum if you search for "debranding". Obviously, this knackers your warranty though :(

There's a thread somewhere on the forum that details each N95 version and operator and which version they use. I can't find it at the moment though...

It's Broke?

Did you know that your Nokia comes with a 2 year warranty? Did you know that Carphone Warehouse are Nokia Repair Centres?
Damage from normal use: wobbly slider, broken keys, quiet earpiece etc... will be repaired for free, and usually the same day if you take it to a big store!

That's known as a sim free phone and should come with the generic product code and no ties to any network.

It won't latch onto the firmware related the the sim in use, if that's what you mean?

yeah im sure thats what i mean lol. so i can put my t-mobile sim in it and it will just take the most up to date firmware and not t-mobiles own branded version, so the issue with t-mobile not doing v21 wont matter because it will just take the generic v21 update and not t-mobiles.

god getting a phone these days is hard work lol there is so much stuff to know!!

god i'm confused, how can my 4 day old ORANGE N95 8gb be on V20 when there is an update out already?

mind boggling.

i'm fairly scared to hack the phone as i don't want to be stuck with a lemon and paying for it for 18 months.

what i don't understand is the software update from the nokia website seems to only be a .exe file. how do i get round this on my mac? i've figured quite a lot of stuff out the last few days but actually have NO idea how to update the firmware.

Welcome to the forums. Please update your profile with your phone model (N95-2) and your firmware version (V.20).

Please have a look around the forum, read the FAQs, etc.

Then you might find out that V.20 is in fact the latest firmware available for your handset and you don't need to do anything about it now.

T Mobile are actually current with the SW for the N95-2 (V20).
There still is no higher SW even for Generic handsets !
So no matter what network you get an N95-2 on it should have V20 available as it seems Nokia are making sure UK netwroks keep current on these unlike the N95-1
