email auto retrieval - am I missing something?
I think I must be missing something here ...
I am experimenting with the in built mail application, wondering if it will suffice for my needs. I have it set up to use an IMAP4 mailbox (gmail) and have set automatic retrieval option to 'auto update'. Now according to the help in the phone itself, this SHOULD mean that whenever an email is delivered to my mailbox on the server, my phone is alerted to this and it in turn alerts me to a new email. However, although the mailbox is connected (which I am having to initiate manually after power on) the email is not being picked up until I choose 'retrieve email'. So ... have I got the idea of this all wrong ... am I expecting to much or should it work as above? |

No matter, sussed it. Have to say though this method of retrieving email is very temperamental ...
Also don't like the fact that use of the red 'hang up' key disconnects the mailbox. Think I will stick with SEVEN for now. |

I dont know how exactly the options are called when the phone is set to english (i'm using german), but one option just notifies you of new mail, while the other also downloads the header. The first option requires the IMAP server to support IMAP-Push and instantly notifies you as soon as the mail hits the server, while the other option operates on a fixed schedule, like every 5min, 15min or whatever you choose, thus it doesn't require the server to support IMAP-Push.
The naming of the features on the N95 is sub-optimal, i first thought the second option would immediately download the entire message. Clearly if you have professional expectations, the built-in email client is not for you. You might check Lonely Cat Game's Profi Mail Client, or if you only use googlemail, they also have a java client which supports pushmail/autoupdate.

Bush and Cheney are in the oval office. The phone rings. It is one of the generals in Iraq. He tells Bush: "Two Brazilian Soldiers died here today". Bush's face takes a grim look and he replies "OK, thanks". Then he starts to cry. Cheney is really puzzled and he asks Bush: "Why do you cry over two Brazilian soldiers?"
Bush looks up to him, still crying and asks: "Dick, do you know how many thousand two Brazilian are? I forgot to ask the general." |
