Music and Movies on a Flight
I would like to use my N95 to listen to music and/or view movies on long flights, but you are supposed to leave your phone turned off for the duration of the flight.
Is it possible to use the N95 to listen to music or play a movie, but somehow leave the phone part of the N95 turned off?

Use "Offline" mode under Profiles.

By which airline?
I'm flying with Qantas soon and they mention allowing phones in 'flight mode' on their aircraft.
I flew with Egyptair recently, I didn't try and use my phone on the plane but no mention was made of flight mode at the time so I suspect they don't allow it yet.

yeah, better be safe rather than having a disaster by using ur cp. I know that the fact of using cp in aircraft is not true. but theres nothing wrong on making a precaution for possibilty of disaster. I dont use my cp even in offline mode.

The issue with mobile on aircraft are, that flying over 300mph and in range of far more base stations than a ground user, is actually confusing/crashing the network!

Hmmm. Having heard the ticking noise that (Digital GSM) phones make in speakers/other phones I wouldn't want that ticking replicated on the air traffic control radio or the radar. Or, more importantly, the in-flight movie.

I can quote for this... I work for Flybe and, stupidly, I left my phone on. Knew about it soon after departure from the 'ticking' noise in the headset as my phone valiantly tried to talk with the entire network at once.
Unfortunately I couldn't reach the damned thing as it was buried in my bag and it was a short busy flight. Apart from the obvious annoying noise in the ears, the Lnav system (lateral left/right navigation) kept kicking itself out into heading mode. First time this was spotted was at cruise height when it became apparent that we were going to miss a turn point by about 2 miles.
On the ground I recovered the phone and turned it off. We did three more flights that day, as it was a clear sunny day, with no further issues.
I can only conclude that the mobile phone signals were causing interference in the instrumentation for the navigation systems, like they were on my headset.
We allow electronic devices (including phones In flight mode) to be used once the seat belt signs are off, unless it's a short flight in which case they're off all the time.
Anyway that's my two cents worth...

Hey Andykn,
I've recently noticed that when Im in a quiet room if I listen to my phone I hear ticking like in a watch. Is that what you mean? Anyway why does the phone tick like that? Can I stop it?

Are you sure you're not holding it to your ear with the hand your watch is on?
I've never heard any ticking, and this is most definitely not what he's talking about. Hold your N95 up to almost anything with a speaker, alarm clocks work good- you'll hear a ticking, much faster than your watch.

actually.. once i flew on air berlin from manchester to hamburg. forgot to switch off my phone or switch it on flight mode (tht time i was using 6680, 2 yrs ago). and it actually rang when it was about to touch down.. LUCKLY i left it in silent (beep once, and vibrate all the way).. so i didnt catch anyone's attention..

Yeah mate im sure it wasnt my watch.
The ticking was slightly faster than a watch would be but either way im pretty sure most phones dont tick.
Why does my N95 tick?

Pseudofinn was spot on with what I was referring to. If you can hear your phone making a ticking noise itself it sounds like it's faulty.

I don't mind offline mode in airlines... but the day they start letting every bore call everyone they want to say "Guess what! We're in the air! Isn't it exciting? Listen, tell Marge I need to..."
will be the day I stop flying. It's bad enough listening to every conversation at full volume in the lounge while you wait for the plane...

What about keeping the N95 charged during a flight? I've heard there are chargers that plug into the audio jack in the seat?

I use mine on the plane all the time. The GPS works in offline mode, and if you've got a window seat, you'll get a lock. The results are interesting!

Hit that

^^Just ensure your not wearing a turbin, or you might get arrested for attempting to use explosives to blow the windows of the plane...
i imagine your results would show you going about 700 km an hour.

Let's be honest. If you could really "bring down" a plane from using a phone, wouldn't that make it a teeny bit too simple for the "terrorists"? Hmmm?
It's probably more to do with the pilot hearing Mario Pił stylee tunes in his headgear.

Each time I go to the USA I use my phone - in offline mode - to listen to music and watch films and so far have never been asked not use it on either the long or the short haul sections of the flight. This has been with many different Airline companies also.
