ive used both core player and divix , core player is much better then divix player , but to be honest if you convert the movies yourself and use real player you can get some amazing results ,

i converted my divix/avi film throuh super with the followig settings

at the very top i have

output container mp4
output video codec mpeg-4
audio codec aac

video size 640x480
aspect 4;3
frame sec 29.97
bitrate 1152 -- can go higher but you will get bigger file
options - high quality - strech -48k audio all ticked

samplin frequency -- 1600
channels 2
bitrate 24kbps

these settings will play through real player excellent and when viewed on a tv you will get much smoother more watchable playback

i watch via my 32" and its good quality , dont forget the better the source file the better the quality of the converted movie youll never get a good converted movie from a bad source movie

try them settings on a short clip and see what you think if you want even better higher the bitrate a bit this should make it smoother ,

the settings above get file sizes of about 700mb -1gb depending on the movie size iam roughly talking about 1hr 30mins -- 2hr long is around 700mb--1gb

I don't bother with annoying re-encoding anymore. I simply download and watch whatever I want using Core Player.

As a matter of fact, I used to use a laptop connected to my 46" TV in the living room to watch downloaded video. Since I got the N95 I just use that most of the time. The quality is a bit lesser than the laptop but sitting 10' away from the screen makes it hardly noticeable.

It works well for me and saves me a lot of time and trouble.

I am sure with re-encoding I could streamline things to be more mobile friendly but nothing I am watching through my phone is destined to be a classic. It is just silly Hollywood movies and TV shows that generally get deleted shortly after watching.

*General Note
To the best of my knowledge there is no mobile video player that supports AC3 audio. Occasionally I will download a DVD rip that has AC3 audio and needs the audio re-encoded.

So you are saying that you do not do any coding of the kind? You just transfer the avi. movie over to phone and use Divx or coreplayer to playback the movie to the TV? Do you get any jerks or distortion with sounds?

It depends on the content.

TV Shows generally play fine.

1 CD AVI movies are hit and miss. Sometimes they play fine and sometimes they get jerky.

2 CD AVI movies never play well.

In Super I used these options for tv out:

Container: mp4
Video codec: Xvid
Audio Codec: mp3

I used a resolution of 640x360 for 16:9 movies, 640x480 would work for a 4:3, or you can just check the resolution of your original file for other ideas, but keep it below 640x480 as that's the output that real player will send to your tv. I also kept the frame rate at the original rate. As long as you are using Real Player with a compatible video format, you can send 640x480 video to your TV.

For the XVID video codec, I used a bitrate of 1000 kbps and in Super the additional options I used were "hi quality", "top quality" (which reduces the overall size of the video), and 48k audio. I suspect that "top quality" would allow a higher video bitrate without making the file too big, I was getting movies that were 250-400 megs.

For the audio I used 128 kbps and a sample rate of 48kHz.

You can batch encode your videos with Super too, so you can just line up a few and run the computer overnight.

How do you get the MP3 codec in the audio window to show up when you choose MP4 as the audio container? I have been trying but it only shows up when you choose, .avi as the output container.

Hi Rick,

Unfortunately I've given away the computer that I had super installed on so I can't check for sure. I think the most likely thing is that I used direct stream copy so that the mp3 soundtrack didn't have to get reencoded. I can't understand why it wouldn't be an option though.

I'm actually trying to solve a different format problem at the moment so I've switched the tool I use to AviDeMux. I've been trying to make PS3 mp4s and it has much better capabilities for converting files without having to re-encode.

Wow this helps big time no need for DVIX player, but one thing I notice is its kind of "pixely" when a dark scene happens...Is there any way to change that? Other than that wicked quality!
