    Convert DVD to N95

I found a very cool way to convert high quality DVD to N95 mp4 High Quality video. I use DVDFAB platinum. I inserted two screenshots so you can see what settings I use. You can copy an entire DVD to about 250-350 mb in High N95 Quality. Or you can copy one chapter so as I did with an music DVD so you can make Cool video clips and you can play them with the Nokia Real Player!!! (20-25 MB one clip)
Have fun this is wy I love MyPresious N95

I use this. Converts any video format (including VCD and DVD) to a format readable by your phone or ipod. It can even join separate files into 1 file, as well as allows you to covert part of a video file.

    Interesting indeed.

This is how I do it:
DVD Shrink (DVD Disc -> VOB files on HDD), select just the movie, remove titles etc..
ProjectX to demux the 1GB VOB MPEG2 files and combine to seperate Audio+Video streams
mplex1.exe to remultiplex the audio+video stream into an MPEG2 file
Videora iPod Converter to convert it to MPEG4

    four separate programs lol

I use mencoder under Linux to rip the DVD to mpeg then convert it to mp4 using Super under Windows.

If I could just figure out AAC audio encoding with mencoder then I could do it in one go.

It's very easy on the Mac. I usually do this:

Use MacTheRipper to rip your DVD to a VIDEO_TS folder.

Use Visualhub to turn the VIDEO_TS into an MP4.

    Or

Just use Handbrake to rip straight from commercial DVD to MP4.

    Kudos

I do a very similar thing; use a DVD decoder to copy the VOBs to HDD then convert using the PSP convertor. I could do with something that joins them together though.

DVD Decrypter can rip just the film to one large VOB if you want.........

What do you guys do about tidying up all the ragged edges of the video frame and adjusting colour/brightness?

Because I need to crop down to a clean picture and adjust the brightness and contrast, I have to

    Rip the DVD to VOBs
Use DVD2AVI to turn the VOBs into a separate video and wav.
Use VFAPIConv to generate a pseudo-avi file
Use VirtualDub to fix interlacing, cropping, resizing and brightness and generate a real avi file.
Use ffmpeg to turn the avi into a MP4/AVC.

    Quick it isn't.

Just got the N95 this weekend, and keen to copy a DVD to it. I've looked at various threads and postings on various forums, and decided to try SUPER (well recommended and free !). Did the DVD Decoder onto HDD, but files are huge, and seem to get bigger after SUPER does its bit - way too big to get a fairly short DVD onto 2Gb. I've seen quite a few postings that indicate whole movies at around 200Mb, so figure I must be doing something dumb.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks.

Further up this thread, Big Hank, has a screen shot of Super showing you the settings to use. I'd start with those.

In my (limited) experience you can cut the video bitrate down to 400 (Big Hank is using 720) and still get top quality video at 25/30 fps but that means about 200MB an hour. A full length film is going to be 400MB not 200MB.

Another tip is not to skimp on the sound. With such a small screen the sound is critical to the experience so you need top quality. 128 KB/s stereo with AAC is fine.

    MrPogle

Thanks for the help. I'm getting closer, but still a way off 200Mb for 1 hr! Tried a small file at c. 400 bitrate and 25 fps as you suggested. Ended up getting 1 min. of video taking 25Mb (which is much better than where I was, but still not where I need to be). Picture quality was very good, audio was a bit off synch. The file is c.65Mb on the DVD disk, which surprised me.

Is it simply a matter of reducing bitrate until picture quality becomes unacceptable, or is there something else to try ?

Any tips on the audio synch ?

    Thanks again, much appreciated.

    Must admit, I'm lost.

If you have video at 400 and audio at 128 then I can't understand how you can get 1 minute to take up 25MB.

    528k bits per second * 60 = 31680k bits per minute
    31680k / 8 = 3960 K Bytes per minute

So 1 minute should be less than 4 MB.

I must admit, I tried using Super some time ago but gave up because it often produced files with sound-sync problems.

I use (after some video pre-processing) PSP Video 9 and it works great.

    PSP Video 9

In order to convert reasonable video for the N95 I use the following settings

    Video
    Encoder - PS3 2-Pass - FFmpeg MI
    Video Codec - MPEG-4 AVC
    Profile - Baseline Profile
    Level - Level 1.3
    Bitrate - 384
    Mode - ABR
    Resolution 320 x 240 (320 x 180 for 16:9 material)
Aspect and Framerate set to Original

    Audio
    Codec AAC-LC
    Mode ABR
    Bitrate 128
    Channels Stereo
    Sample Original

VOB is just raw MPEG2 data, so you can merge the individual 1GB VOB's into one large 5GB VOB file

Go to a Command Prompt (run->cmd.exe) and use the copy command.

    copy video1.vob+video2.vob+video3.vob+video4.vob output.mpg

So in terms of freeware, all you need is:
-DVD Shrink / SmartRipper / etc..
    -The copy command
-Videora iPod converter / SUPER / etc..

Thanks for the logic on size the files should be. Messed around with SUPER using that, and found that the original settings given by BigHank had 'Top Quality' checked, which seemed to add about 3000 to the bitrate of the output file!! Took that off, and all seems fine. 70 minutes of DVD on 270Mb of memory, spot on. Audio synched properly as well. Picture fine.

    Sorted !!

    Thanks again.

Anarchi that sounds like a lotta work mate. look for "auto gordian knot" which combines all those 4 softwares in one. and it does everything for ya. I love that super encoder software too but i dont think you can rip dvds with it. any other options ?

    Hi,
ive used various software to rip dvds (as backups of course) but there are certain dvds that none of these software seem to be able to rip. Does anyone know why this is? Is it because of protection on certain dvds or is it something to do with my software/hardware? I can rip most but not all films.

    I'd appreciate any help.

    Thanks

I have been using a demo version of Mobiola (good for only 5 file conversions, I have one remaining, so I'm no expert on this software).

I've tried Super@ and it's a bit complex for my taste, as I'm pretty much a point and click, drag and drop kinda guy. Tried Roxio's Disc Copy, which came bundled with the Easy Media Creator 9, with very bad video/audio sync.

Today, I ripped the same DVD as yesterday when I used Roxio, but today used Mobiola. The video quality was excellent, and the sound was sync'd to my satisfaction. I rip them to 3gp.

Then, we come to another issue. The N95 (I'm using the 8GB model 2) native Real Player would not open the file (it was around 300MB for a 2 1/2 hour movie). Fortunately I have a backup, the Core Player, which opened it up in a flash, and displayed it perfectly on my little screen.

I like free apps like the next person, but sometimes I also feel that we get what we pay for. I'm not trying to sell anything, just pass on my experiences so far, and more postings will follow as I learn more about how to get everything I need and WANT on my N95.
