Okay - so I have had my N95 for a week or so now. Have been toying with the idea of the HTC S710 and wanted to get one and run both together, but a new monitor was needed instead so I am sticking with the N95. Now...I have a couple of questions:
(a) My standby screen....seems there is wasted space. I have the clock/carrier at the top, then one line of icons then two lines of calendar options, then a WiFi scan section. Is there a way to remove the WiFi scan line (I can scan when I need to find a signal, I don't need it there in the screen). As there's loads of empty space, is there any way to get two or even three lines of icons at the top instead of just the one? (b) On Windows Mobile devices, I could start typing the name of the contact I wanted to call/text and the device would find the right person. Example - I want to call Dave, so I type 3 and it shows all contacts with a d, e or f in the name. I press 2 and it shows all contacts with combinations of d,e,f and a,b,c - by this time, DAve is at the top of the list. Is that possible with any kind of add-on software? (c) What's the "IM" application for? (d) What's the barcode reader for? There'll be more, I am sure :-) Bryan. |

mate for a) tools/settings/gereral/personalisation/standby mode/active stanby/off, get all the icon lines gone and a clear screen to show off a great photo you've taken instead and impress the girls and your mates
in the same section there is a great shortcut ap so the icon on the screen just aren't needed when you can just touch one button. b) speed dials or voice dials will call everyone you need.. c) dont know yet.. d) it reads barcodes that have been discussed elsewhere but.. are little square pictures that are made up of small black/white squares and when "captured" using the bar code reader function on your sweet N95 will be de-coded in to web site adresses etc that you can then visit straight from your phone. example: your reading a mag and there is a cool advert with an email address to visit and a bar code you simply get your phone out use the bar code reader and your checking out the link. does away with manualy typing in addresses... |

(a) I think he's wanting more functionality out of the active standby screen- not less. Some of you guys put too much importance on your wallpaper. The active standby is a wonderful option- unfortunately we have a "lite" version of the feature. It's available in it's full form on the ESeries. Still not sure why we're left with a simpler version of it, but I am glad that we have anything at all. So there is no adding more shortcuts, though they are customizable (I'm sure you've seen how and where to do that?)
(b) Do you mean when you are in contacts, or from the standby screen? When you start inputting numbers in the standby screen, of course it shows up as digits- otherwise I think it'd be a pain in the butt if you're just trying to dial a number. If you're in contacts- hitting 3 should get you in touch with Dave quickly. (c) IM is for instant messaging. (d) Golfnut got you squared on this one.
