Could it be? Charging via USB?

    Hello N95 Users,
I wonder if it could be possible. I'm using my N95 as a modem, so i can connect my notebook to the internet. Last time I forgot to switch it off, so the device was connected several hours (maybe 2).

I was really surprised looking on my little friend totally charged. I'm sure it was nearly out of fuel, when I disconnected manually from the inet 2 hours ago.

Could it be there is a kind of charging mechanism when the mobile is connected via USB and hasn't anything to do?

Yes this is normal. An USB connection can poweron and recharge little things like this. I believe it has 5 volts or so.

The N95 does not support USB charging.

Not exactly USB 2.0 charging, but the nokia CA-100 cabel can charge the N95 via usb port!!!!! SO THE N95 DOES SUPPORT USB CHARGING.....

No, the N95 doesn't support USB charging. It can only get power from the small power plug.

The CA-100 cable gets the power from a USB port, and outputs the power into the Power Plug of the N95, *not* the USB port.

If my soldering skills were up to it I would patch a link from the mini USB socket to the charger port.

Yes but you cannot use direct USB 5v power, you need extra circuitry to increase the voltage for the N95 (you need 6v-7v).

Maybe abraxas is on to something here? He wouldn't start this thread if it was just nothing? Abraxas did you try it again? What happened?

Ive tried it on three different PC's, none of them charge via the MiniUSB port.

Ive noticed the battery life improves after a few weeks, and that the Battery indicater stays on FULL for around 100%->75% charge.
perhaps thats why he thinks it charges from USB.

I can show you half a dozen bs threads in each subforum right now. Lol!

I'm not sure about this 6-7 volts needed for charging the N95 though- both the AC-5U that came with my N95 and my proporta both output 5.0V...

No it doesn't, in fact Nokia sell a charger which is a simple cable with a USB plug on one end and a charging plug on the other. They want about 12 quid for this simple device.

    It's true, I've seen it.

The proporta is the same idea.

I own one of Nokia's CA-100 cables with the USB plug on one end and the charging plug on the other. While it may appear to be a "simple" cable, there is active circuitry embedded in the USB plug end of the cable.

I've got a non-Nokia cable and it's got no circuitry in it. It works fine, so unless Nokia are being hyper-cautious, maybe I'm slowly toasting my N95.

However, I suspect not as a USB port puts out 5v DC and the Nokia mains charger puts out exactly the same.

As USB-power appears to be becoming the universal standard for low-power connectivity I expect everything from now on to support a vanilla-USB power source. It won't be long before you have a USB socket on your car dashboard. Possibly.

True, thats what I'm saying. I have a cheap USB->PowerPlug charger which only outputs 5v, and it has problems charging the N95. Charging cuts out intermittently.

As I understand it the USB Port cannot provide the 800mA required for charging. You may be "toasting" your PC hardware more likley than damaging the phone.

    Very unfortunate poor design imo.

If you're gonna tether it then you can just go ahead and hook up the USB cable with the mini nokia plug at the same time I would imagine
