Moved to the N95 section, you'll get the best help there.

Try cleaning the back of the SIM card with a pencil eraser and the dome contact points in the phone with a soft dry clean cloth. It could be poor contact between the two caused by dirt. It could also be a dodgy SIM, try a different one if cleaning doesn't work. Unlikely although possible is that the internal workings of the phone SIM reader have somehow broken.
I doubt a hard reset would help, but you can try a hard reset the 'manual' way, also referred to a three finger salute: Press and hold Green, * and 3 and keep them held whilst powering on, until it asks for your language. This has the same effect as turning the phone on for the very first time. It does wipe everything from the phone so a back up of your music, photos, videos is essential. It will also change the security code back to 12345, yours is invalid when you try as it has been changed. The worst case scenario is that the phone has been registered as lost or stolen, barring it entirely from any network in the UK. Although if you bought it off a friend I wouldn't have thought this likely. This is usually done as an insurance scam. |
