A big point in favour of Truphone in that case!

I called, using Truphone, to another Truphone-registered N95 last night, making several test calls each way... Checking my account today I see that all calls so far are labelled free and my account balance remains at the initial 2GBP that was added when I first registered.

Nice one Truphone... Now you only need to get the pricing right after December 31st and you'll have a winner! :)

BTW The free calls only apply if you register before the end of this month (September), so don't hesitate for too long!

Does truphone publish their calling rates for non free, and post 12/31/07 destinations on their website?

They publish their current rates, yes (eg 15p/min to UK mobiles)... No mention of how free calls will be affected in 2008 though... That's the only fly in the ointment so far.

I have the same situation. I installed gizmo and voipcheap to the built in SIP settings and it only works with a wifi available. I use AT&T and I don't think there is any carrier blocking going on.
That's what i taught, since i could make voip calls on Edge using Fring (and to be quite honest, the quality is pretty decent). So it is the n95 that is blocking anything but wifi and 3G to be used with the internal built-in voip feature.. That's pretty lame imo.

You're not really making an internet call when you call with Fring since it's thru their software. You must have incredible ears to think that there is any quality to a Fring call on Edge..but anyway I would like to know why the N95 blocks Edge for SIP calling..I saw a preview of the upcoming US 3G version and the reviewer said the same..could not get truphone to connect with 3G. Honestly, my experience with fring on edge (calling my friends in Paris) has been pretty good.. i easily get 150-180k on t-mob edge here in minneapolis (at least according to my speed test on the orb network)...

That's what bothers me, specially since im geting a pretty decent voip experience with fring, eliminating that software layer would give a huge bump to the whole experience...

Okay, Truphone does work with Vodafone network. I set my network to UMTS and it connected to truphone fine. But I'm slightly worried because I see T&C for vodafone that says £2 per mb for voip calls!!!! So I don't use it just incase they installed some kind of data monitoring software on their system.

Yes and truphone can call international numbers free. I've been calling my family in Asia for hours and it didn't charge me anything. There is a list of countries landline / mobile number which u can call for free. It is only until the end of the year though. I think they said they were going to end the promotion in July 2007 but they extended it even more. Hopefully they will just keep extending it.

Fring skype - skype call really sucks though. Quality is so bad + lag + low voice volume.

I might give voipcheap a try if you guys say there is free landline calls!

Good! I know that the latest build is supposed to work over 3G but I couldn't check it as unauthorised data traffic seems to be blocked by my telco recently! :( Probably as well that you don't use Voda for voip, as according their site, Truphone uses 8MB/hour of data.

Hope you're right about this, it's the only aspect of Truphone that could kill it for me...

VoipCheap seems not to like my router(s) but if you intend setting it up, there's a comprehensive guide by Fldude99 here.

I'm travelling to Italy in Oct and will try to use VOIP there with the european 3G.

What do you use voip for? I find the use for voipcheap in that it is free landline calling to many countries and also real cheap to call cellphones in Europe.

Can you tell me how your truphone experience is using wifi? I have heard it plays havoc with the phone. Can you install truphone and also use other SIP profiles?
Truphone is excellent with wifi... truly amazing.. no lag, clear voice, 2 thumbs up.. I mostly use voip to call my friends in europe using the free calling to 40 countries that truphone is offering till 08.

i don't think truphone will work with any other sip profile except their own.. if you are asking if you can have a truphone profile setup and then have another profile configured in the built-in sip software, then yes, this is definitely possible i have tried that (3 profiles .. all only workin with wifi unfortunately)

One thing i have noticed about truphone is that when you go into the application itself and select your edge connection, and try to connect, it will actually connect and you will see a little 3G icon (even though its edge really), but when you open up a contact to actually try to make an internet call, you get that "No Wireless network in range to make internet calls, would like like to make a GSM call instead?"

I have a sip account from a friend's asterix server (located in paris) and i tried entering that as a new sip profile, and the **** thing will only work with wifi, every time i try changing the connection to t-mob edge i get that dreaded "No wireless network in range..."

So my conclusion is that the problem with edge and the built-in sip feature of the n95 is (I am 99% sure) a limitation of the firmware (the built-in sip software), i think the code was written to only allow wifi and 3G for obvious reasons (good voip experience) but i think nokia should let the users be the judge of that, especially for users in the states where 3G is still in its infancy...
i am sure T-Mobile edge in the states is fast enough to allow for fairly decent voip quality...

Are you kidding me?? even 3G us won't work with the built-in sip.. what the heck is going on.. are we missing something?? Is there a hidden setting for US users.. can we use voip with anything other than wifi??? seriously ... i am going berserk over this..
