chirping/whistling in encoded music?

I encoded most of my music as 128k MP3 a long time ago (yes I am trying to incorporate some new music too :)) I used the Nokia suite to convert music to AAC+ but many songs, particularly those with quieter passages, have a chirping/whistling sound during sound transitions. Anyone else experienced this, and can I assume I won't hear it if I re-encode my music? I am using Grado SR-125 headphones which are very good and exaggerate defects so it is very distracting.

The chirping/whistling sound during sound transitions and quiet passages you describe is a well known defect of the N95-1. It is a hardware defect which seems to be fixed in the N95 8GB. You could try to bring the mobile to a nokia care center but I don't know if they can fix it. My N95 has the problem, I am going to buy a new mobile this year and this time I will try the MP3 player before spending my money.

tjeagles: glad it is not an issue for you, that's encouraging. Which n95 do you have?

Granturismo: I have an n95-3. I am surprised it would be a hardware defect. The hiss in the background likely is, but I can stand that (it's kinda retro, like a record needle crackling), but this should be fixable by software (though I could definitely be wrong - hardware decoder?)

Do you have links to others discussing the issue?

Even given Nokia's shaky attitude about updates (four different n95s, all running different firmware versions, all with different capabilities - which all sucks for everyone) I'm still optimistic they could fix this, but since the n95-1 now apparently runs later version (v20 vs v12 for the n95-3), if it still has the problem there may be an issue. Another solution could be a third party audio player, the n95 player's interaction isn't that great in the first place. I will also try re-encoding to see if that fixes the problem.

A few links discussing the hissing problem of the N95 in this forum:
http://www.n95users.com/forum/genera...there-fix.html
http://www.n95users.com/forum/genera...-playback.html
http://www.n95users.com/forum/genera...eadphones.html

You could also try google, the fact is the hissing problem exists, the N95 is a great smart phone but also a terrible MP3 player.

Thanks granturismo. Though it is a poor sign, the hiss I can live with, it fades in the background during moderate volume and is kind of fun in a retro way, I'll see if I can get rid of the chirping/whistling, that's another matter.

I'm using v20 firmware on my N95-1 and have very good audio quality, with minimal hiss and no chirps, whistles or anything else.

Try encoding your music with the HE-AAC v2 codec at 48 kbps, you will be amazed at the quality/file size.
