E-mail Notifications & E-mail Retrieval
In messages>options>settings>E-MAIL>mailboxes>your mailbox>automatic retrieval
There are 2 settings E-mail notifications & E-mail retrieval I usually have e-mail retrieval enabled but i tried notifications today with the auto update option.i though it would auto update my mailbox on my phone when i get an e-mail to me o2 account but it didn't. There isn't no proper info for what this is meant to do as can anyone enlighten me please?

I 'think'..... e-mail retrieval is where the phone periodically connects and downloads any new mail from your e-mail server. The time period being the one you set in the options. I use this and it works fine for my imap mail
E-mail notification is where the phone checks the e-mail server and just notifies you that there is mail to be collected, by adding a little '@' icon on the screen. However I don't think it works, or it doesn't for me anyway. There also seems to be no way to set the interval used to check for mail? |

yes i belive retrieval is where it connects and downloads the entirety of the new email, and notifications is where it only notifies you of the new emails.
the are mutually exclusive because retrieval both notifies and retreives, and notification only notifies. I have been using niether, and instead just log into my imap mailbox from the phone and keep it connected, that way by default it checks every 5 minutes and notifies me (but does not retreieve unless i specifically ask it too) However i think that my method is bad because it keeps the wifi always on, and uses a lot of power. what I am saying is based on the e51, i have not tried it on my N95 but i assume everything is the same except of the notification LED that the e51 has |

Notification doesn't work for me either. I reckon it's a bug, given that we're all having trouble, doubtless with differing email accounts and settings. Retrieval works for me just fine.

Notifications do work with Vodafones MyMail Service. Every half an hour, vodafone checks your yahoo, hotmail etc mailbox, and if new messages are available pushes the headers to the phone. This saves having a constant connection to your accounts.
Unfortunately there is a cost for this - £0.50 a month, or free if you subscribe to the internet browsing pack. |
