If its a legal version, then just go into options and enable it manually.

What version are you on about?

Latest is mobile XT .80 which doesnt require a serial number, its locked to memory card.

Doesn't work that way matey. Garmin will send you a micro SD card, in exchange for some beer vouchers, with the necessary already installed. And, before anyone asks, the software is linked to the card. Copying it to another card doesn't work.

I bought it so why don't you?

Well technically it is as the program itself is free. Though Im not going to give a link, as its safe to assume that anyone asking for it hasnt bought a proper copy.

However the maps are what costs, and the whole functionality is locked to the card you buy.

I suppose one good point of all these people scavving for free copies is a good indicator as to which satnav is the most popular at the moment.

Updates are legally downloadable from the Garmin site. But, of use only to legal users.

No, I beleive that the garmin programs are free to use, as there is lots of free map data from the mapmakers Garmin let you use. The free maps are nothing like any good for navigation, as they are made by users, but you can use pretty much any custom made map.

Besides, the programs are no protected in anyway, either by activation or download. Also, they are not updates, they are full programs.

Garmin: Garmin Mobile XT Navigation for Smartphones Software Update Collection

    There ya go.

Edit: Although it says you must have a previous version installed. Which is odd, because to avoid problems I have always uninstalled first, then installed the new one. Hmm.

Either way, Garmin leave it on their page unprotected and with no login. As far as I can see in the terms of download, it doesnt say you have to own Garmin software. So...*shrugs*...the jury is still out really.

Thanks, but like I said, it is upgrades.

This download area offers free firmware upgrades for select Garmin® units. These upgrades are specific to the specific GPS units and software versions listed.
However, I don't think we should split the hair any thinner!!

As one who runs a Garmin iQue3600 and a bought and paid for Garmin XT package, I do not want to see others getting stuff for free that I have paid for!

Indeed, as theres not a lot of point. But I will say that thats blatently just for their dedicated units, note the term firmware. I think that bit is more about getting the right software with unit, rather than legal stuff.

Either way, Im very much against piracy of it, as you are. Its a decent enough system (even if most people dont like the UI), so it should be paid for.

Ok, I use Garmin. Two things.

    1. Legal Route - Buy the maps (includes license to use software) which then allow internal gps.
    2. Free Route (Illegal) - Use Google, Download maps and crack for software.

(I nor does this forum or any of its members agree with option 2.)

Yep, it fixes some other things (which I didnt have a problem with) and the keypress bug, which affected sms. I havent installed it yet, what did you do, update or wipe and install? And how did it go?

It doesnt bother me that much, so unless its painless I shant bother.

Absolutely painless. I just followed the instructions on the website, word for word, and 10 minutes later I was up and running again. Didn't lose any data either. Wether I'll see any difference - well, I'll wait and see!
Go for it! (Don't forget to backup first )

Using XT Mobile from another memory card

I want to use my Garmin Mobile XT from a new 8G memory card. Can I transfer the protection to that card or I have to stick to the original card?

You are supposed to stick to the original card as per Garmin. There are ways to transfer it to a bigger card none of which are legal and hence are beyond the scope of this forum to discuss.

Yes, for a fast lock you need assisted GPS ON. And yes, also integrated.

This uses a tiny tiny amount of data that shouldnt cost you much at all.

Otherwise, Garmin does not use any data at all, unless you download something like speed cameras or traffic updates. You can set it in the options to confirm if you want to do any of these actions.

Sorry, I got that a bit wrong.

    From main menu, goto -

    Settings - Garmin online -

And change it to whichever you want. Probably disabled is best for you, otherwise it will annoy you with prompts each time you start a journey.

However, dont forget to enable it if you ever need traffic alerts on a journey.

Edit: You got it while I was typing :P

I have garmin XT 4.10 and find it absolutely awful. whenever i come up to a round about it tells me to go left even if its like the 3rd exit. This being england and all which is riddled with round abouts its very frustrating to have to look at the map each time a roundabout comes up.

Am i doing something wrong? any one else have this problem.....why can't it just say "take the X exit".....

Also, you cant edit the names of the locations, such as a friends name etc, it just says the road name. And no postcode search, all in all pretty bad..... any help on any of these issues???

Do you have it updated to the latest version which I believe is 4.10.80. Also, check if your navigation settings are set to car/motorcycle and not pedestrian.

ok ill upgrade! but do you still have it saying go left at every round about? and not " take the X exit". cause if not its not worth upgrading really, such a bad design.

Im afraid to fix that you have to get the latest maps, and Im not sure how you upgrade the maps on mobile XT, you might even have to buy a new package, since its locked to memory card.

Versions 4.1.40, 60 & 80 all say "Enter roundabout and take nth exit!
I suggest you check that you are set up as a vehicle, and not as a walker.

Im pretty sure it was the maps. I had an earlier map release (sadly cannot remember which one) and had the roundabout problem.

Try updating, as that will get rid of other issues, but Im pretty sure you need new maps also.
