Nokia maps - just detailed maps!

I have a problem that i wonder if any of you can shed some light on, i am about to go touring across italy and france and will be taking some really quiet routes, so i thought excellent i'll download the maps from these countries with map loader. takes ages to download but they are all on there, when i load up map loader i don't connect to the network (wi-fi, i never connect directly due to costs). i then find that i can't see any of the maps! :-|
i restart nokia maps and this time i connect to the wi-fi and as i zoom in the maps become visable and they are downloading through the wifi, i wonder what the heck i downloaded in the first place! i closed nokia maps and restarted it and didn't connect to the network again, and the maps had been saved of where i had just viewed.
the problem is i don't know how long this is saved for, plus i need detailed mapping of the whole of france so i looks like the only way that i can do this is to trace my whole route through france in detail just to get the maps saved on my phone, tbh thats what i thought i had downloaded from the nokia website through map loader.
can anyone point out what i am doing wrong and overlooked? and what i need to do to get these maps in detail?
all i want to have is the base maps with detailed roads and some POI's in my phone, so that i can check where i actually am with my GPS and then work out a route how to get there. i don't need actual navigation.
can anyone tell me what i need to do/get/buy to be able to do this on my N95?
Cheers

Did you have your phone connected to your PC in Data Transfer mode when using Map Loader?

Then they should be already there and not need to be downloaded on the fly.
They should be saved on your memory card until you actually delete them.

The data usage you are seeing is probably A-GPS running, not a maps download...

Hi,

I am having the same problem. I have the latest firmware / software, etc.... But Nokiamaps doesn't reconginised that I have downloaded the map file. I have also tried "delete maps from storage" from the Map Loader. The memory card via IE still shows that the files are there and haven't been deleted.

Did you ever solve your problems?

Thanks for your help

Definitely, unless it spent all that time trying to achieve a lock (unlikely).

Is traffic data turned off?
