Does using maps cost you money?
Hi All,
I have just got my n95 and love it, I was a sony user before this but could not resist the great functions of the n95 :) I want to know if when using maps do you get charged for this? Thanks Stevo |

Depends. If you're talking about Nokia maps then its possible to avoid any charges - you need to download the Maploader software (google will find it) and install it to your PC and go from there.
You will still incur some charges, even with stored maps, if you have a-GPS enabled. It uses some data to assist the GPS lock speed, but its minimal and for most of us well worth a few kilobytes here and there (obviously a few kilobytes here and there can be dangerous when roaming, so don't throw all caution to the wind if thats the case). So disable a-GPS and use stored maps to have completely free use of the maps - you won't have navigation support then however, as thats a paid service (unless your phone comes with a free license period as some do, I think it'll tell you when you start Nokia Maps). If you're not planning on using Nokia Maps then there are few free solutions. MGMaps with stored maps is probably the next best completely free solution, but its a bit of effort to do the stored maps thing.

only if you need to download new maps, however you can connect via wifi to download the maps for free, also using nokia map loader, get it here maps.nokia.com
also you have to pay a one off fee for the navigation aspect of nokia maps WN |

In short, crank up the Nokia maps application on your phone, close it (this creates the folder structure) bung this on your PC: Nokia Europe - Nokia Maps - Services, plug your phone in to your PC, select Data Transfer, start Nokia Maps, follow the prompts and bob's your uncle...
On your under Settings - General - Positioning - Positioning Methods, make sure Assisted GPS (and Network Based, just to be safe) are disabled...
