Map questions

Hi - This is my first post so Hello!

I have some quesitons about Maps for my Nokia N95 8GB.

I have downloaded the PC suite from the disc which came with the phone. I downloaded the Map installer and went ahead and downloaded England, Wales, Scotland, and a part of France. Now I could use the Map option on my phone before I downloaded anything from the disc or the Map installer.

So whats the point in dl-ing the Map stuff from the PC suite, if its alredy on the phone?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Ahhhh I get it now. So last night I went to find Rio in Brazil and couldn't find it, thats because I need to DL the map to the phone, then use maps to see it. DOH!

So whenever I look at maps, do I get charged for it? The only reason I ask is that the phone asks for a WLAN then if I click on "cancel" I get the message that there is no internet connection and to check my settings, kind of telling me I am not connected to the web so I won't get charged for looking at the map, is this true?

Is there a way of looking at the maps in like a static view? Where you can view a map but not be connected anywhere?

Thanks for your speedy replies too, I apprecite it!

Which version of maps do you have?

I know that the beta of 2 searches online (stupid imo), and also if you dont have the maps downloaded, it will download them via wlan 3G/GPRS if your not near wifi.

OK Thats got that sorted I think Thanks for that.

So to sum-up some phones have the maps downloaded already, and if a phone doesn't have some maps, then the map downloader from the PC suite will help you get the info onto your phone, so you can then view the maps. Good.

I'm not sure which version I have, should I be looking to have a certain version, is one much better than the other?

Maps V2 has a lot of better things than V1, but its still in beta, and has some bugs. Its set to go full release soon though, so up to you which you choose.

I've noticed quite often confusion in this section between Nokia Maps as an application for navigation, etc. and maps as in country maps, i.e. map data. I'm glad you have managed to work out the difference, this should make your experience with the in-built GPS much better and easier.

If you already have the required maps downloaded to your phone you can look at them all day and all night and you will not be charged for anything.

If you don't have the required maps on your phone, it will try to download them - that's when you will get charged, unless you use free wi-fi access. You will still get a lock if you don't have the maps, but it will be in the middle of a blank screen.

The only other instance in which you get charged (I am not considering here the paid options for voice navigation, etc.) is for using the assisted GPS (A-GPS) - you can read up on what exactly it does in order to get a faster lock on your position if you run a search. However, the amount of data transfer is so small (I would estimate up to 10-12 kB max.) that it is well worth the few pennies for getting a fast fix on your current position.

This post was a great help.

If I click on the Map option on my phone it takes me to the loading screen, where the earth is displayed, it then asks for an internet connection, if I click on cancel it tels me there is no internet connection, if I then click on OK it displays a map of the UK, where I can then zoom in etc and get place names and so on... How do I make sure I am not getting charged, or in otherwords how do I make sure I am using the maps I have downloaded to the phone?

Also, just now I have clicked onto the "log" option to see whats what - The words "contract WAP" appear, does this mean I am getting charged for going onto the map option?
