GPS question - can't zoom in
hey all
just got my n95-3 a few days ago and have been playing around with the GPS and i noticed something... basically, when i go to nokia maps and it displays my position, i can't zoom in closely enough to see the street names and other details (it just shows a blank screen)...the closest i can get is my position relative to toronto, as well as the major airports in the area...once i zoom in more, it just shows the blank screen... when i clicked on satellite status, i have 3 or 4 full black bars consistently at my house, and it shows my coordinates as well...anyone know what the problem might be? btw i didn't install anything yet on the phone except for a few songs, so i don't have the firmware updates...also i'm assume that the phone already had the canada map pre-installed (it's an n95-3), or do i still have to d/l the map online? i turned off a-gps because i believe it will give me data charges if i read it correctly (i'm with rogers), so i only have integrated gps clicked on... thanks for the help |

The phone probably has nothing pre-installed, i.e. you probably have no maps or an old version in your phone, so you cannot see any details about your location.
You need to download the Nokia Maploader software on your PC, then connect your phone in data transfer mode, run the Maploader and download the maps you require. Before downloading it would be worth deleting all existing (if any) maps from your phone, there is a button you click on to do that. I can't seem to find the Maploader software on the North American Nokia sites, but this should work : Nokia Europe - Nokia Maps - Download Ignore steps 1 and 2, you've already done that. Start from 3 and carry on. The data charges for A-GPS are usually negligible, it never costs me more than 5 - 10 pence (UK money) per GPS lock and I am using the N95 with various pay-as-you-go cards without any special data plans. It is well worth using it, you get a lock much much quicker. Last edited by 93tid; 12-21-2007 at 10:46 AM. |

That 5 - 10 pence could be £2 when roaming if your network has a minimum connection charge (as many do). i.e. They charge you for 1MB even if you only use a few kB.

thanks 93tid
i checked the link in your post, and it says that my phone already has nokia maps preinstalled, but that there is an update available... in that case, do i just download the update, and will it just update the version i already have? or should i delete what i have first, then download the update? and it's option 2, how do i delete my preinstalled version? |

When it says Nokia Maps installed it probably just means the app itself.Hook your phone up to your pc and download the maps for your region via the Nokia Map Loader
Nokia Europe - Nokia Maps - Download I know it says Nokia Europe but the app's the same as what i use and Canada is on there.

Exactly what these boys said, and make sure your phone is connected in 'data storage' mode.
