What does the Maps application do with the memory of a N95 8GB?
I just got a brand new N95 8GB (or N95-2 if you prefer) for a friend of mine and I am in the process of tweaking it up for him, i.e. unlocking, debranding, FW upgrade, etc. So far everything is fine and I am currently downloading the full Europe maps.
After the FW upgrade to v15 I did a hard reset *#7370# and formatted the memory, which gave me the usual 76xx MB of free memory. Then I ran the Maps applications once to have the required file structure created, started the Maploader and am happily downloading the maps. What I don't understand is why before download start the Maploader was showing "Space left for maps data: 5360.3 MB". So where did 2.5 GB go ?

Sorry, can't help with your query.
You said in your post that you were in the process of unlocking the N95 8GB. Any tips on how/where I can get mine unlocked from '3'? Cheers Don't hi-jack other peoples threads!!!!! Last edited by Mr G; 02-19-2008 at 11:56 AM. |

My apologies for "hijacking" the users thread.
I was asking the user a direct question (as opposed to an open question to the forum) as he mentioned in his post that he was going to or had unlocked the N95 8GB. If this is not allowed then I am now aware of this. Thank you |

Poor storage management at a guess.
The default cluster size is probably very large, this means that no matter how small a file is it takes up a certain minimum space. Nokia maps creates a large number of very small files. Even though some contain no data they each take up at least the minimum allocation unit. This might help We already know the N95-1 formats the memory card with FAT16, the 8GB version probably does the same. And I found that I saved about 200MB by formatting a 2GB card with FAT32 (not an option for the 8GB) Last edited by Homer; 02-19-2008 at 01:35 PM. |

Anyway, my mate's got his phone and is very happy so far with it, so no issues there.
